Age limit for car rental?

Do rental car companies have a maximum age limit? The websites all discuss the minimum age. Would it make a difference by country?
Thanks

No, but driver license renewal requires passing the medical exam.
And it is more difficult with increasing age.

Yes there is a maximum age for some countries and can depend on insurance coverage, as some insurance companies will have an upper age limit.

It depends on the country and also on the rental agency . . .

So - where are you going?

Yes, it does depend on the agency. Hertz has an upper limit of 69-80 in some countries in Africa, for example. So it varies by company and by country.

janisj, we are thinking of Switzerland and like the freedom of driving.

The UK has age restrictions,or at least some of the rental agencies do.

This page is useful, however it still needs to be read in conjunction with the T&Cs of the rental company which might override this info.

polaris, I would not drive in Switzerland, of all places. Some of the cutest Swiss villages ban cars and others are inaccessible to cars. Switzerland has superb public transportation with trains, busses, boats, gondolas, trams, etc. All superbly coordinated to connect with each other.

In a car the driver would have to keep his or her eyes on the twisty road and won't be able to freely enjoy the wonderful views.

There are certain places where touring by car is the best way to visit. But in Switzerland a car is a handicap.

>>The UK has age restrictions,or at least some of the rental agencies do.<<

Some agencies in just about every country have age restrictions of one sort or another . . . but one would have no trouble renting aged over 70 in the UK.

>>> freedom of driving.
This might be unquestionably true where you live, but depending on where you are going in Switzerland, it can be an expensive albatross around your neck.

Actually in a lot of instances - public transit gives you as much or more freedom. Depends on where really. Parking/traffic can be a biatch and trains/buses get you right into the town centers with no worries about pedestrian only zones etc. Plus many hotels don't provide parking so you may have to hunt for a place to leave the car.

But yes -- road trips can be great too. Just maybe not as foot loose as you imagine.

We have driven in many countries and enjoy the freedom and flexibility of driving, but now DH over 75 so that is reason for post.
