Ah yet another author's home to visit - Jane Austen eat your heart out

Thanks for the heads up. The house, Greenway, opens this weekend. It is now owned by National Trust.

A word of warning - it's absolutely impossible to get to (and judging from the TV coverage looks like a tart's boudoir)

Looks like the "best" way to get there is by ferry, but beware:

Yikes, a tart's boudoir, you say. That might ruin completely my mind's images. :-0

I will be visiting London for a conference and then planned to hike in the Cotswolds, spend a day or two in Bath, and then maybe visit York.

Then, being an Agatha Christie fan, I read the news about the house being opened, and thought I would make a detour to visit. I must say, though, the area doesn't sound promising, and now if my lovely imagination will be rocked by hard reality...not sure it's worth it.

Oh, cool - I am a HUGE fan. Have read each and every book, many several times over. They are some of the few fiction books I love so passionately. I would be interested to hear from anyone who goes to the house.

Fishyfish- definitely make the detour to Greenway. Totnes is the place to make for and a boat trip down the River Dart is delightful, taking in Ms Christie's house en route.

Most of the boats from Totnes to Dartmouth give a glimpse of Greenway House through the trees. This year, a few boats from Totnes will actually call there.

Another firm runs boats to Greenway from Dittisham, Dartmouth, Brixham and Torquay.

Whichever way you do it, it's one of the most beautiful stretches of river in Britain.

I have looked in the NT Handbook, more information than the website. "For the first few months of the season we will gradually be opening the house for timed limited-access visits while we continue to reinstate the collection. Advanced booking for car parking is essential; those arriving by 'green' means will have slots made available to see this unique and magical property." It also says anyone who has not booked a parking space will be turned away. Looks as if you need to telephone and book visit and get latest on travel.

FishyFish: Greenway really isn't much of a doable detour from any of the places you mention (and would be a bear to get to if you only had a day). If it is a "must" - I'd rethink your full itinerary and do the SW instead of the Cotswolds and York.

But - another site you might want to consider instead is her burial site. She is buried in St Mary's churchyard in Cholsey in SE Oxfordshire.
