After the flood

We are planning to visit Prague in March 2003. We know it was flooded and are considering posponing our trip to a later date. Do you know what the conditions are?

I was just in Prague at the end of October. Businesses, hotels, restaurants that were flooded are opening in staggered fashion. The metro was still closed - but Prague is so compact you don't need it. Kampa Island is open to foot traffic but not all businesses on the island are open yet. The city is not in ruins - they are not having to boil water. Some sidewalk are being recobbled due to flood damage. The Four Seasons and Inter Continetal were still closed. The staff at the hotel I stayed at were eager to please and serve, as was the wait staff at all the restaurants. Go before the crowds return. Charles Bridge is open and suffered no visible damage.

I was also in Prague in late October. Everything Mark said was also my observation. There were some areas where it was a little inconvenient getting around because the streets and sidewalks were being dug up for repairs. Also, a couple of the restaurants I was interested in were not open; however I am glad we did not postpone our trip and by March it should be even better. Prague is wonderful, and we got around fine without the metro. We did a lot of walking and our hotel had a car and driver and also called a taxi for us once. Hope you decide to go.

There seems to be no better source of info than www.jasoncholt.com who does not sugarcoat the difficulties of recovery. Numerous publications - - like nytimes.com and others have painted a pretty rosy picture - - and generally I think it is.

But I think that the jason holt site gives me info I cannot get anywhere else.

And I am hoping to take my family there in May.

Best wishes,

Rex
