Italian is going to be easier logistically; Munich - Genoa - Rome is probably going to be easier to do if you are flying since Lufthansa owns Alitalia, and Nice is about 2.5 hours west of Genoa, making it that much farther to Rome -a consideration if you are driving or taking the train to Rome from the beaches.

Depends on what you want from your Riviera experience.
Consider visiting the Cinque Terre. Picturesque!
Some of my favorite memories include cooling off in the Mediterranean after hiking the entire lower trail, with the sense that my husband had to cast a fishing line to haul me in to get ready for dinner and how he enjoyed the partial nudity on the beach (Americans, not locals). The restaurants were terrific, too.
Can get to Monterosso al Mare from Genoa easily by train.
Can walk the easy part of the trail, from Riomaggiore to Manarola, often referred to as the “Via dell’Amore,” an Italian Lover’s Lane or hike the entire length (at least 5 hrs).
Or can languish on the beach or float in the water or take a boat to access the towns.
Colorful Vernazza is captured on paintings and posters that are in galleries worldwide.
Can't say enough good things about the area!
