After Assisi, driving South towards Pompei...need help

I'm close to getting everything reserved for our trip in Oct. One thing I'm not sure and want oppinions for is this. After spending a couple of nights in Assisi, we're driving to anyplace close to Pompei to stay for the night so we can get up the next morning and tour Pompei and then stay in that city again. I was thinking of Caserta for a couple of reasons. They have several major car rental drop offs, and a train station with a direct route to Rome (which is where we're headed next-via train). We won't be doing much sight-seeing in whatever city we choose. Any ideas other than Caserta?

Most people do not like to overnight in Pompei because it is a bit ramshackle. However, we visited friends in Pompei this summer. While my children stayed in our friends home, they introduced us to a great agritourismo on the edge of town. Hidden behind an indescript wall is lovely place with super clean rooms and bath, great swimming pool, and garden's. It is called Natura. It was $50.00 a night for two, with coffee and toast or roll for breakfast. Email me if you want more details. And our friends also took us to a great pizza restaurant with a view of Vesuivius called Bouganvilla Pizza. It was located on the road towards Sorrento.

We drove by Vietri Sul Mare (spelling?) and it looks quite nice. You might find a place there searching on the web. But if you do choose Pompei, I think you would like the agristourismo. I was surprised to find such a nice place. Stay away from Pagani (sp? ) Look very rough. Castellemare looks about the same as Pompei. Sorrento is only about a half hour drive from Pompei, but prices will go up there. It is lovely too. And you can take a train to Pompei ( I believe) I'd stay away from Naples. The driving was really wild. Even our Italians friends who live there are bit intimated by Naples. They had us lock our doors as we drive through the city, and put our purses other the seats because thieves are known to open your door at stop lights. But, it is certainly a lively place. Salerno is a good location too. Avellino looked a bit too citified, and run down in many places. With traffic and road problems, Caserta could take more than 30 minutes, so it might not be as convenient to Pompei as one might like.
