Lavender Fields

I will be based in Avignon for 4 days in July. I will be without a vehicle and I am looking for either public transportation, tour or private driver. I would love to hear from anyone who has done this before. I would like to see the lavender without feeling rushed like some tours do.

I am also looking for any other great experiences anyone has had in the region.

Years ago I took a day trip to see the Orange ampitheatre and the rubble where the Chateauneuf once stood. Of course we stopped for a touristy wine tasting somewhere unexceptional. Undemanding day, but pleasant. The Avignon tourism authority is very helpful both in person and on-line so you can ideas for other activities: http://www.avignon-tourisme.com/home-1-2.html
One simple, cheap way to get some exercise is to take the little boat, free, that ferries across to the island across from the Palais des Popes. Then walk south past several campgrounds, catching unrivalled view of the Palais and city walls, and back across a busy highway bridge.
Arles is worthwhile with its ampitheatres, Van Gogh history, and a good market once or twice a week. Easily done by train, leaving from the Central station as well as the TGV on the edge of town.
Avignon has several art galleries and museums that are often overlooked but worth a visit if that fits your interests.

Don't give up on your original post - people may miss this one and there's still great info back on the other thread. Ignore the "you MUST drive your own car" people - they can't 'listen.' Again, have a great trip!

To see the most beautiful lavender fields, you have to go to the "Plateau de Valensole" the first half of july(http://translate.googleusercontent.c...NmApRyaYKtInBw).
Let's see : http://www.toulonnais.com/valensole1.jpg & http://www.toulonnais.com/valensole2.jpg
