Affordably nice in Rome

Am looking for a nice hotel to stay in Rome. Something that sets it apart from your standard hotel would be great. It's only for 1 night but I can't afford Eden or any such 5 star luxuries. Anything else is possible! ta

Check out Casa Howard. It's a 5-bedroom guest house; each room is decorated differently. They are very service-oriented & will do laundry, provide limo-shuttle service, have breakfast for you, etc. for some other small additional fee. They also have a full-size refrigerator in the hallway that's always stocked with beverages. (Alcoholic & non-alcoholic). Check out their web site at www.casahoward.com

Buon Viaggio,
BC

I think that you asked for affordable. www.venere.com offers many 2 star hotels in Rome. My husband and I stayed at Hotel Stella. It offers bed and breakfast for a third of the Casa Howard. It is near the train station and quite frankly you are going to be in Rome. It would be foolish to spend any time at a hotel other than sleeping.

You want a "nice hotel." You want something that sets it apart from the ordinary places. That implies to me that you want something other than a two star, but not necessarily a luxury hotel. I think the La Residenza in Rome, just off the Via Veneto, is the kind of hotel you would really like; the staff is helpful, and the location is excellent. Otherwise, the Due Torri and the Hotel Mozart, which are more in the western part of the old Rome, are also nice places at a cost below La Residenza.

del Senato on the Piazza del rotunda is a lovely hotel
about 200 Euro / night.
Also have stayed at the Campo de' fiori
,
location same as name.
If it is summer,
would be too hot.
No AC or ceiling fans.
rooms are small but nice,
location , noisy, but it IS rome.
and they have one of the loveliest roof-top terraces I have ever been on!
they run about 150 E/night.

We stayed 6 nights (Jan. 2001) at the Grand Hotel Plaza on Via del Corso, right near the corner of Via Condotti. It's in the designer shopping district near the Spanish Steps. The hotel is a former palazzio with beautiful fresco ceilings and lots of marble. We paid about $200 or so a night. The staff is friendly and the service impeccable. I think the Grand Plaza is a 4 star. I highly recommend it!

I have stayed at four different hotels in Rome, including the Grand hotel Plaza - - and I might rate it worst value of the four. Our experience was not nearly as good as that cited by jlynne - - including indifference by the staff about the lack of hot water for the bath/shower. I thought it was over-priced, and two nights on the very same trip (May 2001) at del Senato were twice as nice at half the price.

Sorry for the slam, but I thought I should offer the direct comparison info.

Best wishes,

Rex
