affordable, reasonable, semi-cheap hotel options in menaggio OR bellagio

hi fodorites -

i know this is a lot to ask for...2 of us will be in como area in late august (high season!). i'm looking for a decently prices hotel or apartment for 2 nights. my budget is 90-130 euros per night. does this exist? if yes, please fork over your suggestions!

so far, i can only find hotel garni corona which looks decent but if i can find better, i will take it. http://hotelgarnicorona.com/rooms/

thanks!

That doesn't look like a bad option -- you can see so much just by taking the ferry from there, and frankly, you may prefer it to something like Bellagio, which will be teeming with tourists.

That's a tough one, in high season. 130E will get you a standard double room at the Bella Vista in Mennagio, which does have a great location and a stunning view. But... I kinda had a bad experience there, frankly, so caveat emptor.

This isn't letting me edit my first response...but I also can suggest Hotel Fioroni, which is at the edge of Bellagio, and where we spent 5 nights in Oct 2011.

I stayed at Hotel Centrale in Bellagio in May 2011 and it was fine - not luxury (tiny TV!), but certainly adequate for us. We paid €120/night. Their web site indicates that their current prices during high season would fit your budget. No views - it's up the hill in Bellagio - but there was a lovely garden out front and it's not a long walk to the lake.

Bellagio was very quiet in mid-May; I can't speak to the experience in August!

thanks, you guys/gals are great! i should also mention that we will not have a car. i noticed some of the slightly out-of-the-way hotels/b&b's recommend a car but we do not have one and don't plan on renting since we will only be in como area for 2 nights.

You might also check Ravenna.

I've stayed in Ravenna, but the hotel (Albergo) name has escaped me.

Easy access to the ferry to Bellagio and Menaggio.

Start with www.venere.com and then check with the hotel directly.

There are also youtube videos on various hotels in Ravenna.

One point to add, the train stops in Ravenna (from Milan).

adrienne Jun 28th, 2013 03:01 PM

rastaguytoday - I think you mean Varenna. Very different from Ravenna.

Look at Hotel Du Lac in Menaggio.

You can send a blanket request for an area and then check if the locations suit you.

Not in either of the places that you mention but close by with ferry connections: Hotel Riviera in Cadenabbia

We rented a studio apartment right in Bellagio 3 years ago--no view but affordable and convenient, clean and comfortable--very nice host.

Hotel Eremo Gaudio is a pretty good walk away from Varenna and even further from the ferry. My understanding is that it has great views, but you should be aware that it's relatively far out compared to other hotels in Varenna. I think the TripAdvisor reviews discuss that in more detail (or at least they did a couple of years ago).

adrienne - dyslexia strikes again.

And to think I actually stayed in this town.

Dukey1 Jun 29th, 2013 12:05 PM

From looking at the hotel-supplied map, the Corona in Menaggio has a great location; easy walking distance to the ferry dock and close to the so-called "downtown" where things happen in the evening.

alifafa Jun 29th, 2013 02:57 PM

if i don't find anything better, hotel garni corona in menaggio will be my choice.

however, i am now considering these 2 places:
il bolentino b&b in varenna (80 euro per night)
il borgo apartments in bellagio (100 euro per night)

both of these are within my price range. however, i cannot tell from the website how central their locations are. if any of have stayed in either of these places, do you know how close these are to the river/ferry dock? we will not have a car so we do not want to be walking up too many steep hills with traffic. thanks :)
