Affordable car rental

My family of 5 are planning to spend 25 days in Italy. We need to rent a car (preferably a larger vehicle), and are having a difficult time finding anything less than $2300.00
Any suggestions or other options?
Thanks, Mickey

Ouch, that is really expensive! In my experience, once you go up to large cars like SUVs or minivans the price goes up exponentially.
I've had awesome luck using Avis and the discount code K817100. It gets me a better rate than even my Avis Preferred membership through my company.

I've read on several boards that for periods of seventeen days or longer, leasing is much cheaper than renting. And full insurance is provided so there is no question about whether or not to decline CDW. The two programs that are consistently mentioned are Renault's Eurodrive program (www.renaultusa.com) and Peugeot's Open Europe program (www.peugeot-openeurope.com) program.

Your problem is that few european cars hold 5 people - and I'm guessing that you're also going for an automatic - which means a large luxury sedan - Mercedes or similar. You can certainly keep shopping - have you tried AutoEurope? - but a luxury car usually carries a similar Pricetag.

(Not bad really if you think about it - in NYC a compact with tax is over $100 per day.)
