Aeolian Islands
 

Can anyone recommend a guidebook on the Aeolian Islands please? The Italian guidebooks don't seem to give them much space-or is it that there isn't much to do?

I very much doubt that there's a guidebook to only the Aeolian Islands. Even the Touring Club of Italy guidebook to Sicily only gives them five pages.

There isn't much to see; most people go there just to relax. Lipari has an Archeological Museum and a Cathedral.

The National Geographic bookguide of Sicily gives a very good description, in my opinion, as to what to see and do there. However, it talks mostly about Lipari, Vulcano and Stromboly. It doesn't say much about the other four islands.

The De Agostini bookguide of Sicily gives a complete description of what to see and do on the seven islands, but it's in Italian. In case you're interested, you can get it on www.internetbookshop.it.

We spent part of our honeymoon in the Aeolian Islands in 2000. We stayed in the Poseidon Hotel in Lipari, which was fine (breakfasts were poor but everything else was okay). Lipari is a beautiful island and a good base for visiting the other islands - Vulcano is fun for the mud baths and the volcano on Stromboli is well worth a boat trip. Lipari has an interesting museum and is a nice small town with plenty of good seafood restaurants.

We used the Rough Guide to Sicily and the Lonely Planet Guide to Sicily as our guidebooks. You could borrow them from the Library and photocopy the bits on the Islands.

I have attached a link for the 2008 Aeolian Islands guide book. I bought this a couple of years ago before I went. The sight is in Italian, but easy enough to figure out. The book is well worth the money and has listings and suggestions for all typres of lodging, restaurants, services etc., including great pictures and things to do. Well worth the money.
The islands are spectacular, volcanoes, mudbaths, rock beaches, boat excursions, etc.

Not much nightlife unless you go at the height of vacation season (July - August). My great grandfather was born there so it was a must see for me.

There are guide books to the Aeolian Islands but I have only seen them for sale in the islands themselves. If you need any specific info on the islands email me at [email protected] and I will sort out any info you need. I have a guide book myself but I bought it in Lipari and have not seen it for sale elsewhere. We also have a website www.siciliangems.com which has info on the islands.
