Aegean Airways: HELP! My empty suitcase weighs almost half the weight limit in economy.! Are they serious?

We're leaving Sunday for Greece. I'm having a mini meltdown over the Aegean Airway website, which says that economy passengers are only allowed one checked bag up to 19 lbs! I'm going away for nearly a month and my suitcase (empty) weighs about 8 or 9 lbs. Would love to hear from others who've flown Aegean or Olympic between the islands. How did you manage? Thanks!

I think they must be referring to carry on. My checked bag weighed 26lbs on Olympic - no problems.

oh, and that was my little backpack. Those people on my flight checking in ten million giant suitcases seemed to get on ok - those had to weigh 3 times as much. I wouldn't worry - but you could call for reassurance.

Good travels Weadles - tell us all about it!

Cheers,

Murphy

I haven't looked at the website - but are you sure it doesn't say 19 kilos?

19 lbs (8+ kilo) sounds more like a carry on limit . . . .

Weadles:

i have checked their website (http://www.aegeanair.com/aegeanen/services/baggage.asp)

The carry-on allowance is 6 kg (13 lbs) and the allowance for checked luggage 15 kg (33 lbs) on domestic and 20 kg (44 lbs) on international flights.

Hope this helps, Enjoy your trip.

Phil.

I didn't have any trouble with Olympic or Aegean and baggage weight...Problems were with Virgin out of London who made me redistribute tiems between my checked bags and remove items from my carry-on..

Another trick is having a suitcase that doesn't weigh so much. But sounds like you are OK from all the other posts.

Yup, from the other posters, sounds like you're OK. Suggestion, though...duffle bags (that's 'seabag' if you're former Navy or Marine Corps).
They're light, very inexpensive and easy to pack. What's more, you can bring two...one folded up and packed inside the other for the trip out, and packed with souvenirs, other loot, or even dirty laundry on the trip home.

Thanks to everyone for calming my fears about the weight limit! Now if I can just get my husband to leave the hard-cover books home! Thanks again to all of you and happy travels...

Weadles, I have never had a problem with weight restrictions on Olympic domestic flights (Aegean doesn't go to my island). I am an avid reader myself, and always carry paperbacks on my trips to the Greek islands. When I finish them they are left behind for other guests to read. Between that and the sunscreen I use, my bags are lighter on the return journey, leaving me room for olive oil/Greek honey/ouzo to bring home.

Oh yes, do make room for the honey! I threw away 2 pairs of pants, a towel and 3 shrits to make room for as many giant tins of honey as I could carry!

Have a great trip.

Hard-cover books? Hope you're kidding. He needs to talk with my sister. She even tears out all of the ads in magazines she takes in order to lighten the weight of her carryon.

Yes, do be careful with the honey. Actually I usually buy it at the airport, so it ends up in my carry-on bag.

BTW, Murphy, if you have never tasted Greek honey you don't know what you are missing.

I absolutely love honey ( and olives!) so to make more room in our bags, I'm going to dump my husband's hard cover books while he's out at the beach... SORT OF KIDDING. And yes, he really is planning on taking them!

And now we know the reason for the worldwide shortage of honey a couple of years ago - Murphy was trying to corner the market. He came to a sticky end though, when a baggage handler dropped his luggage on the tarmac. Hence the phrase known as "Murphy's Law."

Lol Heimdall! Ok, there was a bit of praying going on concerning the honey stash in my checked luggage. It was worth it though - as we speak I am spooning some of my loot into my morning yogurt, mmmmmmm. When I run out it will be just another excuse to return to Greece.

ooooh, I just figured out these happy faces....look out Fodorites here we come! &lt

Cheers,

Murphy
