Advise on Driving from Venice to Sorrento

I am currently organizing our trip to Italy and have included Rome, Montepulcino, Florence, Venice and Sorrento on our must see list. We will be travelling by train to all locations except to Sorrento. Train schedule is not that convenient for this leg of journey and I am thinking of renting a car (we are also renting a car for a week in tuscany) and driving to Sorrento. Would driving a car from Venice to Sorrento be too much for one day? Via michelin says 8 hours. Anybody have any experience in driving this route? Break it up into two days? I would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

>Break it up into two days?<

Were it me, I'd rent the car in Venice, drive to Tuscany, use it there for a week, then drive on to Sorrento...

I have to agree with TuckH. You can make the drive in a day, but it will take your whole day and you will doubtless cringe at all the places you pass by that you just dont feel you have time to stop and check out. If you are planning to be in Tuscany for a week anyway with a car, it only makes sense to break up the drive with that being the middle ground. Depending on how south into Tuscany you are when you embark on the drive to Sorrento, you should be looking at 4-5 hours on the road.

Of course, arrange your itinerary geographically. That drive would be too far.
