Advise needed on itinerary in Lugano

In early September, I will be traveling with my girlfriend (a first time traveler to Europe) to Milan, heading up to Lugano to stay for 1 day and 2 nights.

In previous travels I have taken a boat ride on Lake Lugano to Gandria, traveled the Ticino region by car, and taken the train to stay in Como. Because of the time, I would like to chose only one of the three directions, but because I have enjoyed them all I can not chose. Does anyone have any advise for a first time traveler?

With one full day it makes sense to take the funicular from Lugano-Paradiso up to Mt. San Salvatore, enjoy the views from there, hike to the picturesque village Carone, visit the Baroque church Madonna d'Ongero, hike down to Morcote. Visit Parco Scherrer there and stroll through the narrow alleys and along the arcaded street by the lake. Then take the ferry back to Lugano.

You can have lunch in Carona or Vico Morcote.

This is a recommendation only if you enjoy a bit of hiking. Total hiking time about 3 hours.

Sorry for the typo: the village is Carona.

Great advice from Ingo.

Or, you could just boat directly over to Morcote and climb the paths above. Beautiful views.

We got lost on that climb. Never did reach Vico Morcote. Maybe next time...

Thank you all for the advice. I would love to consider the hike, but would like to have a contingency plan in case of inclement weather. The funicular idea reminded me of the one to the chapel on top of Monte Tamaro, which is a pretty amazing. I also read the previous post on Como vs. Lugano. I would love to hear any other comments.
