Advice/suggestion re Munich Hotels

My family (Wife and 2 young Sons) and I, are hoping to go to Munich or surrounding area, for Christmas 2011. We will be flying in to Munich airport but do not want to stay in the city centre, we would prefer get a hotel 20-30km out of the city, in any direction. I would welcome any suggestions re places to visit and hotels.

Kind Regards

Aidan

You'll want to visit the Marienplatz, the central city square. We found that the big attraction in Munich, besides the central area and the food market, was the science museum, which sits in an island on the river. It is a world-class museum with very interesting interactive exhibits.

With so much to see in the city center, why do you want to commute in from outside Munich?

It's 50 km, but in a very scenic area: The Hotel Ueberfahrt in Rottach-Egern on Tegernsee (Lake) could be an option.

Hi Underhill, yes we definately would like to stay outside the city, as we enjoy the countryside and the peace and quiet.
I do not mind driving 50km or so to reach the city centre and airport.

Hi HSV, thank you for your recommendation, unfortunately that hotel is already booked up for Christmas. If you have any other suggestions, we would be grateful.

You might check out Herrsching on the Amersee, which is a nice lake south of Munich. We were there in the summer time, but I think they have winter activities too. And one real benefit is that you can take the S-Bahn from the Herrsching station into Munich rather than driving (and parking - ugh). The ticket for the S-Bahn is also good for all Munich public transportation. The S-Bahn line that serves Herrsching is the S-8, which also goes to the airport and stops at all the city-center stations.

The partner day ticket costs 19.60 euro and is valid for all Munich transportation zones and covers up to 5 adults.
