Advice please!

Sorry if I am repeating questions but can anyone advise me on the best scenario out of the following -

1) Arrive at Naples airport, stay in Naples for 2 nights / 3 days. During this time take a train to Pompei for half a day. Then on the 3rd day take the train from Naples to Rome.

2) Arrive at Naples airport, take a bus straight to Sorrento. Spend 2 nights / 3 days in Sorrento. Visit Pompei within this time.. Take the bus from Sorrento to Rome on the 3rd day.

3) Arrive at Naples airport, take a bus straight to Sorrento. Spend 2 nights / 3 days in Sorrento. Visit Pompei within this time. Take the train from Sorrento to Naples, then Naples to Rome (on the third day). Maybe wonder around Naples for a couple of hours before heading to rome?

We are visiting in October. I just can't decide whether to stay in naples or sorrento. We do want to see Pompei whilst in the area, and out next destination is Rome. So we just want to do what would be most interesting and convienient. I have noticed the bus journey to Rome from Sorrento is quite long - is it a nice drive?

Thanks!

Opinion is so vehemently and irreconcilably divided on Naples and even Sorrento on Fodor's, I don't think a poll of posters is the way to go about deciding this aspect of your trip. Some people will swear to you Napoli is the worst pit in all of Italy, filthy, dangerous, disgusting, full of thieves -- others will tell you Sorrento is a tourist trap full of cruise ship dumbells who sing along with accordian music and can't handle their limoncello.

If "interesting and convenient" is the sole critera, Napoli is that!

I wouldn't take either a bus or car between that area and Rome. I'd use the trains.

Naples is not a city in that you would wander about in a couple of hours. Possibly outside of Paris, no other city in Europe offers more than Napoli. You would be doing youself an injustice to shortchange Naples. And that is my humble opinion!

thank you,

I would say we want somewhere that is good to get to Pompei from, and then also good to get to Rome from for the second stop of our trip!

I do like the sound of Sorrento but unsure as whether it would be worth the 3.5 hour bus journey to Rome vs the 1.5 hour train ride from Naples to Rome when we are only staying there 2 nights?

But Sorrento is very appealing.

Has anyone heard of people who have taken the bus journey after a 2 night stay?

Also, if we were to stay in Naples rather than Sorrento does anyone have advice on which area? I have heard that they area around the station is not so great, but the historic centre might be better? Sorry if thats not correct!

First: listen to Zeppole and take trains. I love Naples, but also enjoy Sorrento, so it would probably depend on the weather for me. If it is nice, I would stay in Sorrento, and one day boat down to Positano. Raining, Naples and visit museums. Could you park your luggage at Pompeii and visit it on the way down to Sorrento on the first day? I would try for that.
