For some very good ideas click on JMW44's name and find her last trip report. She will leave your mouth watering for Lago Maggiore!

We'v stayed in Locarno three times and love it. For a very convenient, low cost hotel with awesome lake view and friendly owner, consider the Hotel Rondinella Garni, about 2 minutes from the train station. Rooms have balcony and refrigerator and tv with channels in english, french, italian and german. Cost is arount 150 chf/nt for double.

Great restaurants include the nearby Al Pozz and the Cafe del Populo in the old town above Piazza Grande. PG also has shops, a large Manor department store and street vendors with nice jewelry and leather products. You'll enjoy the quiet ambiance of Locarno.

Thanks for the website address for the hotel in Locarno. It looks nice - it's in my top running for the region right now.

Thanks everyone for their advice. I'm thinking about spending 4 nights in the region - probably Locarno. It sounds like there's plenty to do for 4 days - between taking lake trips, hiking and exploring the interesting little towns in the area. I'll probably hop on the train from Zurich airport when I land and head down to Locarno for the 4 nights. I'll have a rail pass, so it will be easy to hop on the trains or busses to get around.
Thanks again.
