Advice on Taxis vs Transfers in Santorini

Hi All,

My friend and I are staying at the Armeni Village Rooms & Suites in Oia, Santorini next month and they have confirmed the cost for their hotel transfers is 30 euro each person each way totalling 60 euro per trip.

Do you suggest we book the transfer on arrival from the airport to our hotel (we arrive 630pm)? Then hail/book a taxi on departure to catch the ferry for the Mykonos port? Our ferry leaves at 12pm. How easy is it to catch taxis in this area?

thanks in advance!

Several years ago my friend and I waited for an hour at the Santorini airport for a taxi to show up. As I recall going back to the airport the hotel made arrangements for taxi pick-up. Personally, I would take the pick-up service.

In Oia there's a square where you catch the bus. I saw taxis waiting there during our visit at the end of this May.

We didn't take a taxi to the port. We did take a taxi to the airport, a taxi called by the hotel, and it cost 30 euros. May be a fixed price. (In Athens, taxis called by the hotel were cheaper than taxis hailed on the street.)

Hotels always overcharge,if you book a transfer in advance.
The Taxis Association of Santorini has an official website, where you can make your booking. ( not online, it requires an email).
The rates mentioned are from 2011, they will send you the updated ones, if there has been any change.

here's the website : http://santorini-taxi.gr

I think you have the wrong impression from Athens...
If the hotel calls a taxi for you, then you have to pay a supplement, taxis hailed on the street are always cheaper .

Of course end price depends also on the traffic etc etc....

A reserved taxi for up to 4 people from the airport to Oia or in reverse will cost you around €35 all in. Don't pay more. You can also spend a bit less if you reserve a seat with a transfer/shuttle service.

http://www.santorinitransfer.com/san...-services.html

If you book a seat on the shuttle bus you will still have to make your way to Armeni Village, but it's easy to find. Ask for directions to the Andronis Hotel. As you face the sea Armeni Village is to the right and below Andronis, next to the Alta Mare Hotel.

Not my experience earlier this month. The hotel said a taxi to the National Archeological Museum was 4 or 5 euros. We saw one outside on the street, took it instead, and he charged us 15 euros. On the way back, we hailed another taxi; he only charged 8 euros.

I don't know where your hotel was to estimate the cost of the taxi ride.
As an Athenian though i do know that there is only 1 tariff in Athens, that all taxis are using.
If you call for a taxi ( from a hotel or your home), you pay a supplement.
That is why hailing a taxi on street is always cheaper.

In your case it sounds like you got overcharged the first time...
In Athens end price it also depends on the traffic conditions, if you got stuck in the traffic, you will pay much more...

Nope, no traffic problems. Our hotel was near Syntagma Square, on the edge of the Plaka. I think we got overcharged both times.

We paid 25 Euros for two people each way (arranged through our hotel) - which seemed reasonable and it was nice to have someone waiting when we arrived. We also left EARLY in the morning and it was nice to have something secured and reliable.

When the Archeology Museum in Athens closed there was a line of taxis waiting - all overcharging. We took one anyway knowing we were getting ripped off The worst was the guy who didn't even know the Archeology museum and took us to the Acropolis museum instead!

hm... how did you know they would all overcharge?
Even if this is happening, it is not the rule.. most taxi drivers are honest.....

Have a huge experience with getting overcharged even in cities where you wouldn't expect it such as Brussels or Amsterdam - unfortunately also in Athens -

Because it was almost twice as much as it took to get there (for us and another couple as well) and because there wasn't any traffic.
But you are right, we only asked two or three - not all of them

But we could have said no so it was our choice!

Do you live in Athens Clausar? I need to find a lady friend there who will hook me up with a certain Athens Designer - there is only one shop that carries her in the US and they charge a fortune! I am very sad I missed the shop when I was in Athens!

Sorry - hijacking another thread

I don't NEED anything (my closet has no room)!

But there is a Athens designer I fell in love with - Ionna Kourbela - that I might want to order some items at some point (after we pay off the last trip!).

My profile name is the same on TA and I can get email there if you know of a willing accomplice

TA is TripAdvisor.com, a travel forum which has become a much better resource tool than Fodor's. Please check them out, clausar, because I am sure you would have a lot to contribute.

We were in Santorini and Athens last month. Used Welcome Pickups for Thira airport to Firostefani hotel and then to the ferry port. Used the again for Athens airport to Plaka area hotel and back. Always on time (early even)nice drivers. I prepaid all of these. They emailed us the night before with the name and a photo of our driver. Met us at the airports with our name on a sign. Ran us about 35 Euros each trip. I felt much more relaxed this way than using taxis.
