Advice on NW Spain & SW France

I am planning a trip in June. Approx 4 days will be spent on coast in SW France & NW Spain.

In France - Is it better to stay in Biarritz & go to St Jean de Luz and surrounding areas, or vice versa.

In Spain - Is it better to stay in San Sebastian & visit Hondarribia or vice versa.

Helpful info might be: we will have a car. One person is 65 & just wants to R&R and enjoy the culture. One person will surf, so beaches are good. I will enjoy it all. We will enjoy buying bread & cheese & having with a glass of vino... nitelife is good too but certainly not essential every eve. We like the historical building type hotels rather then new modern hotels. Wonder if the larger places will give more options of things to do.

Any assistance is appreciated!

Biarritz, and the immediate area, have a few more options for you to choose from. For overall atmosphere and being very walkable, both San Sebastian-Donostia and Hondarribia will suite your needs. I prefer Hondarribia, because I can always drive or take the bus into San Sebastian (20 minutes by bus).

Since you have a car, you may want to consider staying in Hondarribia for the entire 4 days, using it as a base. There are several country homes that will suit you needs:

Iketxe, very popular. We've stayed here several times. Patxi and Fatima are the perfect hosts.

Maidanea, just down the road from Iketxe.

Aritzarra, a newer property in the same area with three apartments. We had clients stay there last year and have booked the entire property for ourselves for the second half of July.

Antxotegi, in Irún, on the border and has a swimming pool.

I'd definitely stay in St-Jean-de-Luz over Biarritz - it's an immensely charming town and not as big, crowded, or glitzy as Biarritz. I don't think there's any surfing right at the beach at S-JdL, though.

Two good restaurants there are Irrintzina (Basque) and Au Chipiron (seafood).
