Brian, Hillhead is one of the more run-down areas of the city, fit only for students and curry shops, though fun & cheerful.I know, I stayed there for a while, along with a cupboard full of fungus & a kitchen full of cockroaches.
There are many much more pleasant areas.Did you ever set foot anwhere South of the river?
I can't agree with your view of the city, from your previous Torremolinos post I see you don't even know when closing time is.(impossible for anyone actually living there)
I'm glad you found the natives hospitable, possibly you misunderstood what they were saying.
A supposedly true story ( or maybe just a joke ):

An Englishman had gone to Scotland for a job interview. Everything had gone well and they were at that 'exchange a few pleasantries before we shake hands & go our seperate ways' stage. One of the interviewers ( thinking of Golf ) asked 'Do you enjoy our national sport ?'. The Englishman replied 'Yes I do like a drink'.

Yes (sigh) and you must have topped it just as I was settling in to the 25 minute manual search I've just given up on. Oh well, at least you found it.

Wow, thanks for all of the advice! I'm really enjoying reading the messages (now that I've found them...) In answer to some of the questions, I'm a biology major at Boston College. My choice was random, more than anything. Needed a school with a lot of science courses, english speaking, etc. So I picked Glasgow. I'm definitely excited about it, I leave next Friday, so now I just need to figure out what to pack! Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

Robin

If I did more than "sigh", how could I confess it to such a gentle soul as you?

And Robin I'm sending an email of some stuff I did for Elvira on Glasgow- and she only has a weekend.

If you need help when here, or want to see the North East, e-mail me.
Hows this for a good one...

Met these two canadian girls who came over in February to go back-packing round Europe. They then spent the next 4 months going out in Glasgow every night till their money ran out. Then they took jobs in the city and still haven't made it any further round Europe.

Thats just the sort of classy, fun-filled place Glasgow is.

PS Surry?? Edinburgh, York or Cambridge??!!?? I'd sooner castrate myself.
