Advice on Car vs. Train in Germany
 

We will be picking up our car at the Frankfurt airport and using it for 2 weeks before we arrive in Munich. My dilemma is, for our last 4 days, would it make sense to drop our car off in Berchtesgaden, take a train to Munich; after several days, take a train to Rothenburg for an overnight; spend our last day in Wurzburg, then train on to Frankfurt airport? I know we won't miss having a car in Munich...but as far as the last part of the trip, would we miss out by not having a car? Is it a fairly long haul to the interior of Rothenburg from the station? Are there luggage lockers in the Wurzburg train station? We are tempted to take the train, but if the car is easier and more logical, we will stick with our original plan. Thanks for your input.

With what you save by not ating car rental for 4 days, you can take a cab from the train station. :)

A more serious question is do you want to have to go through 2-3 changes en route?

If you are traveling from anywhere by rail you always have to change in Steinach as a rule and from Munich in Treuchtlingen as well. Depending on the timing you choose there could even be a THIRD change so plan accodingly. I believe you may even be able to route yourself to Ro thenburg through Wurzburg if you wish.

To answer THE question: the RR station sits just outside the walls and it is a very short walk from the station to the nearest entrance (over the moat).

I agree you do not need (or want) a car in Munich.

I cannot speak to the locker situation in Wurzburg but I suspect there is probably a left luggage room there.

Good point, you two...Lots of train changes!! I bet you use a lot of time up doing that as well, not to mention putting your luggage overhead, getting it down, rinse and repeat. Perhaps we will just keep the car.

I guess I just hate to "park" it for several days in Munich...seems a waste of money! But I guess in the scheme of things, it is worth the convenience.

Why not drive from Berchtesgaden to Rothenburg and Wurzburg, then go to Munich and drop the car?

It's a straight shot by train from Munich to Frankfurt FRA.

Good suggestion, Ira...however, I was able to get a rate of 135 euro for Le Meridien and if I reschedule, the rates have gone up dramatically (like 3 times as much) I am determined to stay there now just to say I got a deal! It would have made sense were it not for my stubborness!!!

There should be luggage lockers in the station at Rothenburg. Go to the Bayern-Takt website, at http://www.bayern-takt.de/public_mai...=44679babee839, and select Rothenburg o.d.Tauber from the "All stations" menu.

Note that the box for "Luggage lockers (Schliessfächer) is checked and the floorplan for the station shows the luggage locker symbol next to track (GLEIS) 1.
