Advice on 9 day trip to Greece

Hello fellow travelers,

I am going to Greece for a 9 day trip very very soon and I need some advice. I am a 22 year old Canadian (living in Switzerland for a couple months), and I will be travelering solo. I fly in and out of Athens.

I have been told that March is not a good month to visit the Islands, so I was thinking of doing the mainland....Is this a realistic itenerary?

March 13th: Go straight to Corinth then to Nafplio for the night
14: Day in Napflio
15: Day trip to mycenae, bus to Gythion
16: Walk around Gythion/ if there is time day trip to Mystras
17: Day trip to the Diros caves...bus back to athens..
18-21..spend a couple days in Athens and a 2 day tour of Meteora...

I also had a couple other questions...
1) Does anyone know of a tour company that does tours of Diros caves from Gythion that accommodates for single travelers or how you could get there without a car?
2) Good tour companies for a tour out of Athens to Meteora for 2 days (budget as possible)?
3) Since I am a single traveler, and there doesn't seem to be hostels in Nafplio (harder to meet people), would it make more sence to stay in Athens first to meet people than move on to Nafplio?

Thanks so much in advance for replies!!

Cheers,
Nicole

Hi Nicky: We were in Greece in October /09 and the best thing we did was hire a private driver. We got personal service and the experience was awesome. Since you are travelling by yourself, check out George the Best Taxi Driver in Greece. They have a forum where you can post your destinations and possibly buddy up with other travellers to fill a vehicle and cut costs as they charge by the car not the # of passenger although there is a limit. Send him an email and he can give you the details. Good Luck

Hi LeeAnne,
How did you find the driver. I am thinking about doing a 4 day CHAT tour (Classical Greece 9A) mainly because I do not feel like driving but there are 3 of us, it adds up and there is no flexibility. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Well Nicole, I can't help you finding a hostel in Napflion, but it is a beautiful little city, very compact. And friendly. We met many people just sitting in the outdoor cafes having a drink. Perhaps you can find a small pension where it would be easier to meet others. Athens is nice, but getting out of Athens is better, in my opinion.

Mspo, be prepared to pay a LOT if you don't take a tour, or drive, or take public transport. The George/Taxi Driver thing can cost HUNDREDS per day and if you go out of town for 2 nights -- wow. Remember, even though you might hire the guy during the day -- he will be away from Athens and unable to earn revenue i nthe evening; and you would have to pay his room/board too. Astromnical. If you are thinking about Tour #9A -- that goes all the way to Olympia, and then to Delphi.

You cn do a day trip to Delphi, taking the earliest intercity (KTEL) bus @ about 7 am arrives 10:30; last bus back is 6 pm, excpt sundays 9pm. cost €13.60 each way. You can do Olympia public KTEL bus to Olympia takes 5.5 hours. So -- no magic answers!! it's time vs. money, or else drive. I will tell you that the highway all the way to Olympia is modern & excellent tho boring. Delphi also quite good, more hills.

mspo,

For a trip to Greece in the spring of 2008 I enquired of George the Famous Taxi Driver about a day trip to Delphi from Athens and a day trip to Corinth/Mycenae/Nafplion/Epidaurus. Each would have been for 2 people.

The quote was 280E per person up to 4 people. And that doesn't include an overnight stay or admission fees. As Jan said... not cheap.

I ended up renting a car for a whole week for about the same price as one person for one day with one of George's drivers and had the fun of driving in Greece as well. Don't be put off by horror stories... driving in Greece is not the horrible experience it's often made out to be. I had 2 of the most entertaining days ever behind the wheel on the 2 trips mentioned above.
