Advice Needed - Travel to Switzerland in October with 1 year child

Hi. We are planning to travel to Switzerland in first week of October 2012 with our 1 year old son. This is our first travel to Europe / Switzerland. We plan to stay at Interlaken, Lucerne and Zermatt. Needed advice on the intenary, places to visit, etc considering the time (1st week of october) and we will have 1 year infant with us. Thanks for your help and suggestions in advance.

Well I do;t think a toddler will really care where you go - as long as there are some playgrounds and time to run around a little. Perhaps will enjoy some of the boat rides - lake steamers should still be operating the beginning of Oct.

If you do ascend any of the mountains do be3 aware that your child may become cranky - esp if you do the Jungfrau or other very high peaks - since it can make you feel alittle lightheaded or even give you a headache - and the baby won;t be able to explain.

In terms of specifically what to do and see- it;s hard to say without knowing your interests and you baby is to oyoung for most of the kids activities. Perhaps consider the Swiss Village near Brienz, which I believe has a farm with some animals that might interest him.

As nytraveler mentioned, a toddler may not care what you visit, except that he could get bored. The mirror garden in Luzern could be something:

The village near Brienz mentioned above is Ballenberg: http://www.ballenberg.ch/

You could take the boat from Interlaken to Brienz and then the bus to Ballenberg.

nytraveller, WildWanderings.... Thanks for your suggestions... I mentioned about the baby since I wanted to understand if they would be comfortable in the climate (temperature in early oct) and at high altitudes at some of these places....Would appreciate further suggestions / advise...Thanks

Hi Gpritam,

I'm afraid I think that you are trying to fit it too much for just 7 nights. Having three separate bases in so little time means that you'll waste a lot of time and energy in studpid chores -- packing up and checking out, then checking in and unpacking again. Normally, travellers can estimate that they lose about 1/2 day of "outside" time because of these chores, but with an infant, I think it will be even longer.

For that reason, I would really encourage you to have only two bases in Switzerland. I guess I would have just ONE mountain base (either Zermatt or Interlaken) and then Luzern.

Have fun as you plan!
