A few years ago (about 5), i put a gash in the driver's side door in a Pugeot that I rented in Rome. This incident was completely my fault. My credit card company took care of the complete bill, and aside from the letter from Hertz that the claim was settled, I heard absolutely nothing more.

I rented in Ireland and damaged a tire hitting a curb. Not covered by CDW. Cost me $150. Oh, well, I guess it was better than running into that lorry head on. :-) ((b))

Alec, have you used that insure4carhire?
I just rented a car from Nova that had all the coverage included and then purchased the additional excess from insure4carhire. But when I got the paperwork it seemed very involved for filing a claim. I have been debating on whether to cancel it and see if my Amex premium covers the excess. I know they cover regular CDW , if it is refused, but Nova's prices include CDW and their price for the car was super great! I'm waiting until I finally get my policy from Amex to see what they cover for an excess. They do have the best CC insurance coverage. Most cards come in as a secondary coverage but they come in as primary so your personal auto insurance is never involved...and your premium won't go up. It's really reasonable too. $24.95 is billed when you charge the rental. |

Hi mr_go,
Just wondering if there have been any positive developments with the Hertz folks... hoping so! |
This doesn't involve Hertz, and the rental was in North Carolina, so take what you need from this.
I had a rental from a large US chain because my car was in the shop after an accident. The scam artists at this rental company claimed there was a scratch somewhere on the car when I returned it (there were a number of scratches on the car already, and they were marked on the contract when I got the car). What they then tried to do was charge me for six (6) different scratch repairs, plus out of service fee, plus padding the bill fees, etc. I guess they tried to charge six different people the entire fee. Don't mess with me. I'm already battered and bruised and my arm was in a sling. Not a good time to pull this on me. I couldn't get them to not charge for the non-existant scratch, but I didn't have to pay for the other 5 nor the other fees. My insurance agent dropped that office for insurance related rentals. So, finally getting to the point, check the invoice to make sure they aren't charging you for some dent that isn't yours. |
I give first class praise to all of the participants for my one experience with an accident with a rental car in the UK, rented in Glasgow and returned in Oxford. The Hertz people in Oxford, the USA and Hounslow, UK and VISA USA were cooperative to the extreme and, best of all, it didn't cost me anything.
