advice for travel from Rome to Cinque Terre
My husband and I are going to Europe for 10 days, leaving Christmas night (this will be my first time!). We are spending 4 days in Rome, 3 in Athens, and 3 in Paris. We would love to see Cinque Terre while in Rome for one day/one night. Any one have any advice on travel to/from Rome and Cinque Terre? Should we take an overnight train? We don't want to be so rushed we can't enjoy our visit, but want to make the most of our time.

It is not easy to get to Cinque Terre from Rome and December is not an optimal time to plan a visit to the Cinque Terre. It is a very exposed, steeply hilly place by the sea. The enjoyment of Cinque Terre is to walk up high in the hills to see the stunning views, or to relax in the sunshine in a cafe or restaurant.
Plus, I think you are going to find out you are already doing perhaps too much on one trip. Save Cinque Terre for a future return to Europe and I would even suggest that you re-think your present itinerary to focus on just one country, or two cities.

I think you can find a hotel in your price range but be aware it is not off-season for the hotel business in Italy. The Christmas holidays, in particular the week between Xmas and New Year's, is a "holiday week" for most Italians, who travel extensively in the time frame, and very often go sightseeing to Rome and elsewhere.
But I suggest you do a search of Fodor's for "budget hotel Rome" or put up a new post asking, but you're likely to be told to do a search if you haven't already done one.

For cheap hotels, the first stop should be one of the hotel web-sites, like www.venere.com, then look up your choice on trip-advisor.
Alternatively, google B&B in Rome - it's great place for B&B and booking now you should have loads of choice for Christmas time.
Leave Cinque Terre for Spring!
