Advice for Paris
 

Hi all,

Need some advice about Paris, though it will be my 13th time there...And so an absence of 4 years I find myself a bit confused and ask for the wisdom of the crowd.
I will be in Paris early in October and I plan to visit some exhibitions in the morning and my question is what to do after that.

2nd day - Musee d'Orsay
3rd day - Hotel de la Marine
4th day - Louvre (Louvre is in itself takes a lot of time so I'm not sure about that yet, if someone can share an opinion about the Naples exhibition)
5th day - Nothing specific either a stroll at the Monmartre or Musee Cluny if not both.

Can someone sahre an opinion about the Bourse de Commerce? I haven't visited there yet but I'm not that fond of modern art.

What do you mean by Hotel de Marine? DO you mean the maritime museum near Trocadero? I really like it but it's being renovated and wont' open until November, I think.

Visiting museums is a personal thing, I think. I am not sure what you mean about visiting exhibitions in the morning, but that sounds like more art museums?

Your call, I personally would never visit both the Louvre and Orsay in the same trip, I choose one (I got to Paris almost every year). Sometimes neither. I prefer smaller museums.

I'm not a big fan of modern/contemporary art either and have no opinion on the Bourse de Commerce. Not sure why you picked it. If I wanted to go to a modern art museum, I'd go to Palais de Tokyo/City of Paris Modern Art museum or even the Pompidou or the Fondation Vuitton. You can see some contemporary at the Orsay.

I'd do other things than just visit art museums myself. There are plenty of other good museums than just art galleries in Paris.

I have not visited the Bourse de Commerce yet, but it's certainly on my list. I would love to see the interior of this historic building now preserved and repurposed to house the Pineault Collection.
And, I love the Cluny. It was the only museum we visited during our trip in May that wasn't mobbed.

I was there in May and it's imperative that you buy Louvre tickets in advance. We tried on a Thursday to buy tickets for the next day, but the soonest any were available was 4 days later on Monday. We didn't visit the Orsay this time but you probably need to do the same.

We were unable to get tickets for the Orangerie for any day during our 6-day stay the last week in May.

I found out hotel de Marine is a new historic building on place de la Concorde, open in 2021. Used to be used by the French Navy and never a tourist site before. Sounds interesting for something new to do.

You mean you are not a fan of Contemporary Art. Plenty of Moderns are exhibited at Musee d'Orsay.

I live in Paris and I would recommend strolling in some cool quarters in Paris like the Marais, one of my favourite place in Paris
maybe try a rooftop too and le marché des enfants rouges, very crowded on weekends though
Musée d'orsay is a good spot, I also would check the Grand Palais if you got enough time

Christina, Yes, we were hoping to get over to Hotel du Marine for lunch, believe there are two places for such, but naturally, in Paris never did get there last Fall. But then never hit everything on my list per usual.

Zvi, I would strongly recommend the City of Paris FREE museum, the Carnavalet in the 4th or 9th, which is excellent, recently reopened in lovely old maison, tracing the city's roots from hundreds of years. Only need about 1 1/2 hr there tops, and can have great meal around the corner at Cafe des Musees.

We enjoyed our visit to the Hôtel de la Marine last fall - it’s really well done. If you don’t like modern art, you will not like the Pinault Collection at the Bourse. You have lots of good ideas in this thread already. Enjoy your trip!

taking a breakfast at Café Laperouse is a must do in Paris

Thanks Shelem, since Hotel de la Marine was in question I immediately understood he/she ment that one.

The Bourse du Commerce has been bought by French billionaire François Pinault (Gucci, Christie's, Balenciaga owner...), who is exhibiting some of his contemporary art there. It's a great place to visit if you like this type of art, otherwise there's not much point.
There is a rooftop restaurant at the top of the building, which is very good but not for all budgets!

If youre 13th time and havent been to Jaquemart-Andre museum or Sevres Id recommend those, or even the Musee Marmottan. And if you havent had afternoon tea at Mariage Freres (best teas in the world), then would highly recommend!

Thank you Touringtimothy. I've been sevral times at Jaquemart-Andre and Marmottan. This time there aren't any exhibitions that I'm interested in.
What do you mean about Sevre? What is that?
