My hubby and I plan to travel to Italy in November 2005 and are clueless as to where to go and what to see.
We have about 14 days and would love to do the Cinque Terre walk for a few days, staying Monterosso area.
Any suggestions where to go from there?
Obviously we can't do everything, but what would be the most practical from C.T.?
I'd rather just see a little bit of Italy and really enjoy it. That way we will have to come back another time!!
PS> it is our 20th wedding anniversary, so I guess a romantic holiday would be nice!

Maybe Venice to Cinque Terre to Florence? Keep in mind that Cinque Terre will be "out of season" so some things may be closed. Others more expert can tell of their experiences during that time of year.
There are so many great places, I would recommend picking up a few good guides and seeing what fits your interests. It is good to just choose a few places to visit and really enjoy those.

I would also encourage you to include Venice. You might check a guidebook like Rick Steves Italy for some suggestions. I've not been to Cinque Terra so can't help with that. But Venice would be a great city to either start or end your trip (fly in or leave from). In two weeks I think Florence, Venice, and CT would make an ideal and well paced trip.

Not only will Cinque Terre be out of season but the weather could be unpleasant in November. We have friends that went in late October and found it chilly and rainy and left after a day and a half. It might not be the romantic interlude you envision. With 14 days for a first trip to Italy in November, I would recommend Venice, Florence and Rome. You will love Italy and perhaps the next time can travel at a time that is "in season" for the Cinque Terre.

When there's a chance the weather could be iffy, I choose destinations that have many indoor attractions as opposed to places like the C.T. which are oriented entirely to being outdoors. If it's early November, I'd pick Florence, Rome and Venice. If late November, I might replace Venice with Bologna.

A few years back we went to Venice in early November. It was quite chilly that year but definately worth the trip. We flew into Venice for 3 nites, took a train to Florence for 3 nites, picked up a car and headed south to Sienna (and surrounding area), then dropped our car in Rome for 3 nites. It was a wonderful trip, with no crowds except for Rome. I think if were to do it again, we would reverse and start in Rome. After the hectic pace of Rome, I felt exhausted upon our return. Venice is much more relaxing. Happy planning.
