Villa Borghese - Neighborhood restaurants?

We are celebrating our 30th anniversary with a trip to Italy in late October. The first 4 days will be in Rome and we are staying outside the south side of Villa Borghese. We've heard great things about the museum here but need some recommendations on 'neighborhood' restaurants. We would like to experience Rome like a native and not a tourist. So where should we go? (Hotel on Via Piemonte). Also, any special place to have drinks or coffee and watch the sunset from the rooftops?

I haven't eaten at Cantina Cantarini, Sallustio, 12; 06/485528, but have read very favorable reviews of it. It's included in a list of the 10 best trattorias in Rome here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/201...rattorias-rome

It's quite close to Via Piemonte.

If you go to the Capitoline Museums, you can have a drink at their rooftop cafe, which offers excellent views. It's a wonderful museum, too. At ground level, a short distance from the beautiful plaza designed by Michelangelo, you have great views onto the Forum. The museum is open until 8 pm except Monday when it is closed; the cafe is open until 7:30 pm.

Well, don't go to La Fontana, which we just did. Actually, it was ok, but there are much better places. We walked thru the park and then along Via Veneto, which has expensive hotels and tons of cafes. Many clearly touting their business for the tourists.

We did go to the Capuchin Museum, which has an underground section of decorated rooms, all decorated with people's bones. It was very interesting, but I am still not clear on the motivation to decorate with human remains. Anyway, I just mention this because it is a nice walk from the Galleria Borghese.

Good luck finding a restaurant!

We enjoyed Pagaroma. It's north of the Borghese gardens and is a bit expensive but we really enjoyed it. It's reviewed in Travel Advisor.

ttt as we will be staying for a week near the same area, about a 5 minute walk nw of Piazza del Popolo.

So I'm wondering about any other restaurant suggestions, or if the OP has some recommendations after having been there!

The area the OP was talking about (Via Piemonte) is a lot further than 5 minute walk from Piazza del Popolo (and all uphill). Where are you staying wrenwood?

Yes, there is an unbelievable middle market old school pizza/ pasta place just north of The Villa. Our Italian friends took us, no tourists just full of military / diplomatic types. It is absolutely heaving with locals, you turn the light above your table from white to red when you are ready to order, it is that sort of place.

I will look the name up, can't remember.

Much of the area around Piazza Del Popolo is either diplomatic, banking or towards the Spanish steps very touristy. We found the best place across the park gardens to the north.

You should consider crossing the river to eat at places like Sorpasso in Prati. Check out Tavole Romane's suggestions for Prati and do google searches, or ask on Chowhound for Prati recommendations.
