Advance tickets absolutely needed for which Rome sights?
 

Which sights in Rome are absolute musts to get tickets far in advance, if any? I am doing guided tours of the Vatican and the Colosseum, but I'm not sure what other sights, such as the Borghese Gardens, require advance tickets that need to be purchased far in advance, or at least a few weeks in advance.

We will be in Rome in July, so I'm less than 90 days from my trip.

Yes, Borghese requires advance tickets as entries are 2 hour time slotted.

Are you touring the Colosseum only or the Forum also? Entry tickets are good for 2 consecutive days with one visit to each area. If you are only touring the Colosseum, you could come back the next day and visit the Forum (or continue on to the Forum on the same day).

Galleria or Gardens? Reservations are mandatory for the Borghese Galleria but not for the Borghese Gardens which is a public park.

Entry to other sights may not be mandatory, but reservations (where offered) can prevent your needing to stand in long lines on a hot day.

Slight correction - the Borghese requires a reservation be made in advance for your selected time slots. Tickets can be purchased when you arrive.

Also the Vatican. I took the early morning entrance, which was expensive, but worth it, as the museum filled up so much by noon it was impossible to enjoy. That was last October.

but do they have to be booked at least a few weeks in advance was the question- hard to believe a museum may be booked for weeks in advance- are they no possibilities of walk-up tickets after waiting in line?

There are probably others but they may not be on you radar if this is a first visit.

As Leely2 says. Both the Galleria Borghese and Domus Romane need to be reserved in advance. When we were there a few weeks ago, someone asked for tickets for the Borghese - the earliest available was a few days later. So you don't necessarily need to get them weeks in advance, but then, you won't have your choice of time slots.

The Palazzo Farnese, too, and we were told that they must be reserved 3 weeks in advance. Note that there are few English tours, so do check the website. The website wasn't even active when I was in Rome, so it may be difficult to get tickets for this.

We didn't go to the Vatican, but yes, you would be wise to get tickets in advance or else you'll be waiting on a long line. I don't know about availability if you don't get tickets in advance.

The Vatican Museums have no reservations for daytime visits, so they can't be fully booked. The issue is the length of the ticket line. They do have reservations for the Friday evening visits, which are offered only in the busier months, and for the early-entry visits. Obviously, guided tours also must be reserved.
