Add on to Olympic stay- Islands or Italy?
Thank you to everyone who responded to my earlier post regarding my concerns about the security for the Olympics. We've decided to go and now I have 1 additional question. Should we add on days in the Greek Islands or Italy? I've been to Italy but my husband never has and he is 2nd generation Italian so I think he'd love it. But I've heard the Greek Islands are breathtaking. Another option may be to do a day trip to an island from Athens. Is that possible?
Thanks! |
Hi wil,
For only two days, stay in Greece. |
Stay in Greece if you're already in Greece. You can take another trip some day to Italy only.

I agree, for such a short time stay in Greece. Save Italy for when you can really enjoy it. You can fly to several different islands from Athens: Skiathos, Crete, Rhodes, Kos and Santorini to name a few. I recommend Santorini as the most breathtaking. The view from the cliff into the caldera is spectacular. Stay in the most beautiful village of Oia. Look at the website below for some great photos:

If you go to Greece and don't see the islands then you haven't been to Greece in my opinion..Italy is great but it is worth a separate trip.

You could try the island of Hydra for a day trip from Athens. It's only an hour or so sailing. No cars allowed.

Agree with the other posters that for only a couple of days you should stay in Greece, but I wonder how many other Olympic goers have the same idea? My guess is that flights and high speed ferries to the islands will be booked solid during that period, as will accommodation in nearby islands like Hydra.
I still think a trip to the islands would be worthwhile, but have a backup plan (like a trip to the Peloponnese) just in case. |
