Add-on cities for an Amsterdam and Cologne trip in April

We are traveling with a group to Amsterdam (3 days) then Cologne (3 days) in late April 2013. Any ideas on the ideal city(s) to add a 5 day trip for only my husband and me?

Hmm, this thread is tagged "Austria," and that is not your destination?

Are you looking for places to go before or after your group trip?
How are you getting to Amsterdam and coming home from Cologne? Do you have an option to start/end the trip anywhere you want and fly(?) into/from there?

Agree you need to provide more details - such as how you will be traveling (train? car? air?) and if you already have air tickets in/out.

Also ask the editors to change the tag to Germany - unless you are planning to head to Austria.

Well the Rhine Gorge and lovely Mosel Valley are both a short train or car ride south of Cologne and places where several days can lovingly be spent.

You are right, this was my first post and only after it 'posted' did I see the country and that it is wrong. We can go before or after the group trip and have the option to fly from any cities as I will book our flights. I appreciate your ideas.

Before Amsterdam or after Cologne
These two are connected very well by train from either Amsterdam or Cologne: Paris or Belgium (Bruges, Antwerp, Brussels). Fly into/out of CDG or BRU.

After Cologne
Mosel Valley and the Rhine and fly home from FRA.
Berlin and fly home from Berlin.
Munich then fly home from MUC.
Rothenburg for 2 nights, then Munich then fly home from MUC.
Eastern France such as Alsace.
And pretty much anywhere Germany especially between Cologne and Munich, such as Würzburg, Heidelberg, Nuremberg...

I don't think you need to go further afield than Amsterdam, unless you're looking for another notch or two on your "countries visited" belt. Around Amsterdam itself you could do day trips to Delft, Haarlem, Zaanse Schans, all of which have much to offer. I don't think 3 days in Amsterdam itself is enough to experience it, but that's just MHO.

Here is another take on what to do after Amsterdam and Cologne.
