Acropolis and knee replacement
Greetings, I had a knee replacement 4 months ago and will be visiting Athens in early May,9 weeks from today. How hard is the climb to get to the Acropolis? If it is to difficult what other sites or things might you suggest? As always thank you for your time and ideas.

Doc, there is an elevator for the handicapped. I just used "Google" to find out who is eligible. It only mentions wheelchair users, so I do not know if you would qualify.
Most of the approach is on a sloping ramp, but when you do get to the final stretch, below the Beule Gate (you should look at some photos), undeniably there are quite a few steps. Once you reach the top it's pretty much all on a level. I suggest a walk around the Acropolis Base on the totally pedestrianized streets... it is beautiful and will give you views of many historic sites. check out this link http://www.athensinfoguide.com/walk3.htm |
travelerjan gave you really good advice. I remember that just before we reached the top entrance, the terrain was uneven in spots, with lots of steps. I think you might find that quite difficult.

Thank you both very much. Guess I will try to find a location where I can at least view the Acropolis. I shall attempt to use the elevator but we shall see what happens. Are there other locations from which I can view the top? Traveling many miles it would be nice to see.

Doc, that pedestrianized walkway that I recommended provides CONSTANT different perspectives on the Parthenon!
Last year I was going up to the Acropolis with a travel pal, much older, who suddenly felt she couldn't attempt the climb ... we walked down again. Later I walked on that pathway, and realized there was BEAUTIFUL vista of the Parthenon, from the "back" path behind Acropolis, on the stretch called Dionysus Aeropagus. I brought my friend there at Sunset, with the moon rising, and took her picture gazing up at the Parthenon there. |
You can climb the Acropolis easily, as long as you don't bring your knees.
