Wow, thanks. I learned it this morning (European time) on tripadvisor's Venice Forum but I can't believe even Zattere in Dorsoduro got affected like the first pic above.

JulieVikmanis Dec 1st, 2008 05:36 AM

How sad.

annhig Dec 1st, 2008 05:55 AM

Wow, steve!

are they your pics?

I'm not altogether surprised - when we were there at easter the water was very high, though nothing like this.

presumably the vaporetti aren't running - as they can't get under the bridges.

regards, ann

No - not mine, Ann.

They're on La Repubblica's website - they've all been sent in today by readers.

Good, aren't they?

Steve

Holy cow! I was supposed to leave for Venice tomorrow but United messed up my flights and I cancelled. Venice in the floods would not be fun. Someone really does look out for me!

LoveItaly Dec 1st, 2008 08:19 AM

The vaporetti held a strike on Monday.

Dayle Dec 1st, 2008 08:26 AM

Wow, I feel bad for the shop owners who weren't prepared for this much Acqua!

Trust the Italians to have the temporary boot baggies in holiday colors!

MelJ Dec 1st, 2008 11:15 AM

I have pictures of some of those exact spots (one is right outside our hotel) from just three weeks ago!

I love the pic of the manniquins in the store winow, wearing boots!

Wow! Many of the Italians look like it's just another acqua alta in Venice as they go along in their day. Amazing.

Thats bad news. We are supposed to land in Venice on 7th December :)

annhig Dec 2nd, 2008 08:50 AM

hi had,

don't think anyone will be "landing" in Venice anytime soon.

Have you contacted your hotel to ask for up to date arrangements?

have you packed your waders?

good luck,

regards, ann

Thank you Steve! Those pix are amazing! Do you know if they were expecting such a high tide?

gomiki Dec 2nd, 2008 09:05 AM

I just read the BBC article. That answered my questions.

Steve,

Thanks for posting a link to the photos. As strange as this may sound, I really wish I was there to experience it just for the photo ops alone.

Thank you for posting this, it is just amazing...and you just got to love those Venetians...still put the postcards out, put those boots on, get the boat and life goes on!

And like Tom, as sick as it sounds, I wish I were there to experience it, and all those photo ops. As long as no one gets hurt....

Brings a thought, do Venetians have flood insurance? if so, it must be super expensive!

tribi Dec 2nd, 2008 12:02 PM

I feel so bad for those people that live there and the ones that are there on vacation, I was there a month ago and had such a wonderful time that it makes me sad to see them not being able to enjoy their walk thru Venice.

LoveItaly Dec 2nd, 2008 12:20 PM

Hi lyb, the City of Venice is going to pay 1million Euro for damages to shops and merchandise. The merchants were suppose to have a meeting with the city fathers today.

I have two friends in the Region of Veneto that own insurance agencies but I have never thought to ask them if flood insurance is available. That is a good question.

lyb Dec 2nd, 2008 03:32 PM

LoveItaly,

the cost for this great city has to be enormous as a result of floods...which is why, I don't mind the higher prices when I'm there, I'll be happy to pay my share to keep this treasure alive.

If you get a chance to ask your friends about the flood insurance, I'd be interested to know and how expensive, how it works...because sadly they are pretty much certain taht they will need it at one point or another, though this particular flood is worse than others.
