Acorn TV
This is not really a travel post, however, my husband and I are Anglophiles that love a good British mystery or comedy and thought other US travelers here might be interested in this topic.
We have exhausted what is available on Netflix, but have recently discovered Acorn TV!! It is available (among other places) on Samsung Smart TV's (which I luckily own), so I downloaded the app today and am so excited about what is available. Does anyone have a favorite show available on Acorn TV? |
Yes, and now I want this tv. Can you see season 7 of Doc Martin?
|
I have had Acorn TV for a couple of months now, and really love it. I've enjoyed Vera, a detective series set in Newcastle, and A Place to Call Home, an Australian drama which reminds me of Downton Abbey, and is very compelling.
|
YES, flpab, and I think that is the first thing we're going to watch.
|
Enewell, I've watched Vera on Netflix already (new seasons?) and have seen A Place to Call Home shown on Acorn TV - thanks for the recommendation, I'll try it soon!
|
Just watched the first episode of Season 4--oh my! But it looks as though there will be only 5 episodes: not enough.
|
Do you watch Corrie? My favorite TV show from any country.
|
We subscribed to Acorn for a year or so at $4.99 a month. We watched everything we wanted to watch, then cancelled. I expect we will subscribe agin when there is enough we want to see available.

Oh tsk. You should give people a chance to see what they're missing:

I have been a subscriber for over a year. I very much enjoy the streaming programs Acorn provides.
I find that they seem to bring in new shows regularly and although I do not watch all of the shows they provide I do find enough to keep me as a subscriber. Something interesting also about the service. Last year, while traveling in Italy, I was able to watch a show there streaming with WiFi at night before bed. I do not download shows to my iPad and was happy to be abler to relax after a long day touring by connecting to Acorn. Maybe things have changed but I was not able to stream either Netflix or Amazon. I think it has something to do with the license requirements of the other providers. |
Are the shows on Acorn TV shown in high definition or only in standard?
|
Last night we watched the final 2 episodes of "A Place to Call Home," Season 4--why so few? That's really disappointing, especially as the four episodes jump all over the place. I suppose some of the actors are busy appearing in other programs, but 4 episodes are hardly a season.
|
Underhill... I think those were just the first 4 episodes of the new season. Look like Acorn is releasing two a week.
I know those 4 were the actual 4 because I've been cheating by checking out things on the IMDB -:) |
I enjoyed Island at War and Pie in the Sky, with Richard Griffiths of Harry Potter fame. I had Acorn for 10 months and while I tried other shows, there wasn't enough to keep my interest. This was about 2 years ago.

Do they show the greatest British soap ever?>>
I always think of Acorn Antiques when i read about Acorn TV, dotheboyshall. |
We loved Acorn while in the US, but now we live in Prague, and we cannot get it here. How do you get it in Europe? We tried setting up a vpn or proxy but Acorn fails, and it is very hard to get a response from them, although the stuff they have is often worth watching.
Any suggestions? |
