Accompanying spouse on business trip?

This is probably an odd question. I may have the opportunity to accompany my husband on a couple of business trips to Europe. For many years, we have booked 100% of our personal international trips with frequent flyer miles, so have never had to purchase trip insurance. Obviously, my flights for these business trips would be at our expense.

My concern: a couple years ago, while he was working for another company, I was supposed to go with him on a business trip to D.C. The conference ended up being cancelled, and I was out the price of my ticket. The ticket wasn't that much, so it was annoying but not too horrible. However, if I buy a ticket to Europe, that is obviously going to be more costly.

Has anyone gone on a business trip under these circumstances, and if so, how did you protect yourself financially? It's hard for me to believe that trip cancellation insurance would cover someone for a reason as minor as that. On the other hand, the cost of a fully refundable ticket would be too high.

I can't imagine that trip insurance would NOT cover you for cancellation. Call a few companies and ask.

I used to travel with my husband for his work many years ago. Normal cancellation plans will not cover this. You need a "cancel for any reason" plan and they are more expensive. You need to make sure that the plan will reimburse you for the entire cost of the ticket, not just a change fee for you to use the ticket in the future. A good place to start looking is the website www.insuremytrip.com. They have a list of companies that provide this type of insurance.

That really surprises me. I guess I've lived a sheltered travel life because of using frequent flyer miles so much. Thanks very much!

I didn't see the second reply before responding. That's very helpful information, Lynnaustin. Thank you.
