Accomodations near Neuschwanstein Castle
 

I see we have lots of experts on Germany here. Great! Can anyone recommend hotel accomodations around the Fussen or Schwangau area? I want to visit the Wieskirche, Neuschwanstein, and Schloss Hohenschwangau. We are looking for something conveniently located, but full of character. Cost is not the biggest consideration. <BR> <BR>Also, does anyone know the drive time from Munich to this part of Bavaria? What about from Fussen to Salzburg? I am going in January, and assume it will be COLD?? Any other advice or "don't miss" suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've never been past Munich. Thanks.

We visited Fussen in May of this year, stayed at Hotel zum Ritter, not loaded with character but convenient, good breakfast and acommodating host. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are within easy walking distance of each other and a nice walk from Fussen (buses also make the run). A word of advice, you might be competing with skiers for lodging, Tegelberg is nearby. Driving from Munich to Fussen is about 2 hours, in normal weather. Go to www.euroshell.com for driving info and maps, be aware that they use European names for cities, e.g. Munich is Munchen. <BR>

I would stay in either Oberammagau or <BR>Reutte Austria to avoid the ski crowd <BR>in Garmisch. Go search and find a place <BR>called " GUTSHOF SCHLUXEN" near Reutte. <BR>The drive is about 2.5 hours from the <BR>airport--Innsbruck is only an hour from <BR>there. but Salzburg will be about 3 hours. Yes , it will be cold.

Woodhouse: Bob is right, stay elsewhere. We are planning a trip for next May and have selected a place in nearby Oberammergau. It's the Hotel Alte Post and they have their own website in english at www.ogau.de/homeengl.htm. The place looks gorgeous and is pretty reasonable. <BR> <BR>You can drive from Munich to Oberammergau in under two hours on clear roads. <BR> <BR>Make sure that you take in Garmisch, Ettal and Linderhof Castle in addition to Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and the Weiskirche. They are all pretty close by. <BR> <BR>If I remember correctly, Salzburg is about two hours east of Munich, through Bertchesgaden. <BR> <BR>Have a good trip!

We did the castles last year in Feb and were so glad we had heavy wool gloves with us. Our hats came in handy too. If your head and hands are warm, the rest of your body just feels warmer too. Be aware, the "walk" up to Neuschwanstein is a killer, especially in winter! Don't miss Linderhof - it's absolutely stunning! Enjoy!

Hi, we were in Fussen last Feb (it was cold but sunny and beautiful!) and we found a great B&B--Haus Peters, 5-1/2 Augusten Strasse. This is a big pink house 1 blk from the train station and 1 blk from town, we could walk everywhere. The Peters are great hosts, speak English (and several other languages), and let us park in their driveway securely locked up behind a gate. Our room, #1 (w/bath) was nicely decorated, had 3 twin beds, table/chair and small loveseat. We had a balcony with a view of the castle. The Peters' yard is full of bird feeders and houses and beautifully landscaped. All this for only 80 DM ($44.44 last year). This B&B is listed in Rick Steves but we were lucky enough to just stumble upon it by ourselves. We drove the Romantic Road and the area around Frankfurt and had no problems finding good, inexpensive hotels. Good luck and have a great trip. <BR>

Hello, <BR>I'm planning to visit mad Ludwig's castles this coming May. I'll be heading up into Germany from Venice. Would it be better to drive or take the train to Reutte/Fuse ? <BR>Also, afterwards I'm planning to head towards Paris by going thru Switzerland. Once again, is it better to go by car or train ? Stayed at Hotel Alpenrose in Howenschangau in 1995 for 2 weeks in December. Great place to stay and convenient. Nice day trips to Garmish <BR>where you can visit a cookoo shop next to the hotel General Patton. Go to Innsbrook and the Savorski(?) crystals. <BR>Take a train from Fussen to Ausgurg 2 hrs. nice ride.Austrian border and Reutte about 15 miles. Have a great trip. Will be going to Austria next fall. <BR>

Just got back from Bavaria...I vote for Reutte (Roy-ta). Nice shopping, eating establishments, convenient to the sites you mention, and Austria is relatively inexpensive. Although we had no reservations we had numerous lodging options and ended up at a wonderful zimmer. <BR>

Never been to Bavaria, but I am really excited to see Neuschwanstein castle. I have heard many things about this castle. I would like to suggest you to please visit there and share your experience.

The few times that we've been in that area we've stayed at Hotel Weinbauer in Schwangau. Not uber fancy, but very clean and comfortable with great prices. It's very conveniently located for the attractions you mentioned you want to see.

Must be a new record. This thread it 12 YEARS OLD. Why do people dredge up this stuff to advertise their web sites?

There are several hotels on the valley floor in Hohenschwangau adjacent to Hohenschwangau castle and to the access road/path to Neuschwanstein. FredMc mentioned the Alpenrose. We stayed at the Hotel Muller, which we can recommend. So it is not necessary to stay in Fussen or further points, especially if you making a quick stop. Staying so close to the castles makes it easy to get to Neuschwanstein early before the tour buses arrive. Though this may not be a problem in February.

As for driving distances/times, look them up at a mapping site like Google Maps, www.viamichelin.com or www.de.map24.com. Allow extra time for winter driving.

Wieskirche makes a good stop en route from Munich. It's about 25 minutes before Hohenschwangau.
