Accomodations in Cesky Krumlov
 

Hi,

Planning a trip in June and have narrowed down to 3 choices. The Hotel U Vacalava, Hotel Old Inn or house of the golden angel. Pluses or minuses of each facility?

Any input or feedback would be welcome.

Never stayed at any of them, but Hotel Ruze is considered the best place in that town. It is very lovely.

We stayed at the Ruze last summer and it was lovely, but also fairly expensive in a country that is not expensive at all.

Will you be in Cesky Krumlov Jun 18-20th for the Rose Festival?

I had trouble finding a room for June 1 a few months ago. My first 3 choices were booked and we ended up with the last room at the Golden Angel. It may come down to who has a room. Check to see if there is availability as soon as possible.

We stayed at U Vaclava in 2002 for 4 nights and it was a wonderful, charming little hotel ( more of a pension ), one of the best we have enjoyed in Europe. Poster bed, huge bath and room (for Europe), wood floors, satin sheets, dead end street and the lady owner speaks 5 languages. They only had 2 rooms but were renovating 3 more when we stayed. The breakfast room in the lower level was filled with classical music, a fire and wonderful food and service by Roman the boy friday. Couldn't pick a better location either. She had an art gallery on the ground floor level. Remembering it makes me want to head there this weekend. Cost about 75 US. I am sure the Ruze ( we looked at it too) is nice but much more $. Book it asap.

One more thought... Prague has recovered nicely from the great flood, but Cesky Crumlov was also hit REALLY hard. I am wondering how well the hotels (especially the mom & pop type pensions) have been restored. I would be wary of rooms on the lowest floors, as some might be musty/moldy, as is the case with many of the older buildings in that area. Wherever you stay, I would probably try to book a room on a higher floor.

Anyone out there had any experiences with that issue in the flood hit towns?

What is a good restaurant/cafe in Cesky Krumlov? I will be there in July.

What about purchasing glass here? Any recommendations?

Will be arriving after the festival which is too bad, but I suspect all the rooms for that time are already booked.

About buying glass in Cesky Krumlov... I've had tour guides tell me that it is cheaper there than in Prague. I have not found that to be true, but I have discovered many unique things for sale there that I did not see in Prague (beaded jewelry with glass pendants, door hangings..) Most items are still tourist oriented, but you can find very nice things. I would comparison shop in Prague, first, if you are making Krumlov a day trip. A smaller town might have better buys on glass, etc.

We found a very good gypsie restaurant when we were there a few years ago. Interesting and good. can't recal the name or street but we found it walking around the center. It was crowded and a bit noisy, but very different.
