Accomodations in Bavaria

Hello all -
We're looking for a quaint, inexpensive place to stay in the Upper Bavaria south area. We would like a gasthof if possible. There will be 3 adults in the room.

Here are some I am looking at:

Klais - Gasthof Post Klais

Garmisch - Gastehaus Reiter,
Werdenfelser Hof, Alpengasthof zum Schweizerbartl,
Gasthof zum Rassen,
Gasthof Fraundorfer

Mittenwald - Hotel Alpenrose

Oberammergau - Hotel Alte Post

Please give me your experiences and/or opinions on these choices.

Thank you!

We just returned last week from that area. We stayed at Guesthaus Post Klais and loved it. It is about half-way between Garmish & Mittenwald. We had a car, so going everywhere was easy. The rooms are large and the dinners at night are great. They serve a good dunkles beer and also a very good white wine.

I've never stayed in ANY of the places you mentioned (but had great meals in both the Fraundorfer and Werdenfelser Hof) even though I've probably stayed in that area 20 nights over the past 10 years. I love that region almost as much as I love Berchtesgaden.

That being said, it's hard to find a lousy place to stay anywhere in Bavaria. Have you checked Bavaria Ben's website? I swear by this guy. Great info and interesting recommendations that are usually very reasonably priced:

I personally find Oberammergau to be a lot less hectic and friendlier than Garmisch. I think there's a little ill-feelings in the latter due to the downsizing of US military bases in Germany. Garmisch used to be a huge recreational area for American servicemen and the local economy was dependent on entertaining military folks and their families. A recreational base is still there but there are much fewer military folks pumping money into the Garmisch business community. It seems that now the hospitality business caters to other European Union tourists who come there for the skiing.

Oberammergau is also dependent on tourism but the pace is much slower there. They are a closer community and I find them to be much more accomodating. We showed up in town one night without reservations. The first Gasthof we visited was booked-up but the proprietor made a number of phone calls to his buddies until he found us rooms.

Swisshiker, can't help much since we haven't stayed in this area in many years, but the Gasthof Fraundorfer in Garmisch gets consistently high marks.

Add this one to your list for good value and good food in Oberammergau.

Here's where we stayed in Oberammergau, a very nice pension. Owners speak excellent English and were a wealth of information about the surrounding area.

Sorry, my response should have been addressed to swisschocolate!! My oops!

That's ok, bettyk - I knew you meant me! :)

Thanks to those who have responded so far. Anyone else?

Hi,
While we haven't stayed in the places you're looking at,
we stayed in Mittewald in Oct. '05 and Oct. '06 and simply love it there. It's probably the prettiest village anywhere in Bavaria (that's just our opinion). From here it's very easy to visit Garmisch and Oberammergau.

Both times we stayed at (and can recommend of course) the Pension Schwalbennestl.

The website is in German only, yet you can correspond in English.

If interested, our photo's of the Pension and the area are at:

Hope this helps.
