Accomodations for Amalfi Coast -no car
 

Hello!
We're looking for an affordable (<125E/nt) place to stay on Amalfi Coast for 3-4 nts of our honeymoon in late May 2008. We want to visit some of the coastal towns, Pompeii & possibly Capri- and will not have a car. We're planning to use train/bus/boat. Is Sorrento a good home base?

As you are without car, I reply yes: Sorrento is the best place.
Anyway, Sorrento is not in Amalfi Coast.
Sorrento is in Penisola Sorrentina.
Amalfi Coast, whose main town (small, anyway) is Amalfi, goes from Vietri sul Mare to Positano ( or viceversa !).
From Sorrento you easily can go by bus to Amalfi, by hydrofoil to Capri and by train to Pompei.
I lived 27 wonderful years of my life in Penisola Sorrentina.

I can highly recommend room #12 at www.lesirene.com in Praiano.

If you are coming from Rome, you can train to Naples and transfer to the Circumvesuviana line in Naples.

Get off at Pompei Scavi. There is a place to leave your luggage while you visit Pompeii.

Continue on the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, and take the SITA bus to Praiano.

We loved Sorrento and did not have a car when we were there. We also did pretty much what you are talking about doing. As far as a hotel is concerned, we stayed at the Hotel Il Faro based on reviews in Rick Steves book (we got a discount by mentioning it when we reserved the room) and also rviews on Trip Advisor. it was a great place - right in the harbor. There is a shuttle bus that takes you up the hill into town, but then we usually walked back down since it was harder to find the bus for the return trip. The restaurant at the hotel was fabulous (with some of the best limoncello in town ;-)!). A double room with a great view of Vesuvius was 128E/night with the discount, so it might be slightly out of your budget, but you might want to check it out anyway.

Hi Kate - Opinions vary on Sorrento. Some like it, others find it a disappointment ...

Yes - it's convenient for public transport ... but personally I MUCH prefer to stay on the Amalfi Coast itself.

If I'm reading the poster right (and I think I am) their 3 to 4 nights is involving MOSTLY traveling somewhere else -- Capri and Pompeii are both pretty much full day trips. Praino and other coastal towns are WONDERFUL for sitting and relaxing, but hardly worth staying in if you're planning to leave every day to go elsewhere. Sorrento is ideal if you're planning on leaving one day for Pompeii, and one day for Capri, and possibly a third day to take the bus or a boat hopping off at Positano, Amalfi, and maybe up to Ravello.
