I don't have any specific recommendations but if you enter these cities in "text search" I'm sure you can find recommendations. Rick Steves' guide books offer moderate accommodations as do I'm sure Fodors. I've had great luck with Rick Steves in other countries.

Oscar - In addition to the Fodors and Frommers recommendations, you can search on this forum using keywords such as "Rome hotels" "Venice hotels" etc. to get recommendations. You can then check availability, rates and photos on these two useful websites:

www.venere.it
www.itwg.com

Just a word of caution - I used itwg.com to reserve a room in Naples last summer. Upon leaving the hotel I paid in cash and got a receipt, yet itwg.com charged my credit card for two nights stay despite numerous emails and my sending in a letter with a copy of the receipt. They still have not answered any of my letters or email. I was away for two months last summer so by the time I realized that my card had been charged, it was too late to contest the charges...

Also itwg.com stated that the hotel I was staying in had air conditioning, room service and a bar - they had none of these, so use this website with caution!
