Accomodation in Rome, September
 

My friend and I are looking for accomodation in Rome for a 6-day stay. But we're on a budget and Rome is pretty expensive. I've looked into all kinds of hotel, hostels and appartments and have found
one hotel and one appartment to consider, but they're really pushing the limits of our budget.

I've found the appartment on Rentalinrome.com, but I've heard troubling accounts of double bookings and the like. So now I'm a bit hesitant to use rentalinrome. Could someone advise me on whether to use it or not?

Suggestions for a 6-day stay, 5 nights sleep within the range of € 350-400 for 2 people are more than welcome. :)

Some more information like when you're travelling would help.

Your budget is exceptionally low so you may have to consider places outside the historic centre of Rome, like the EUR area - which is about 5km outside but still on a metro line so not altogether inconvenient.

There are lots of cheap hotel options around Termini station as well. Try Booking.com or Venere.com.

That's pretty low for Rome. There are some convents that would be in your budget. Fraterna Domus is well located, includes breakfast(and AC) and has private bath, but has an 11pm curfew. You want the one on via Monte Brianzo. Most things are walkable from there although the Colosseum would be a bit of a trek.

Santa Sofia doesn't have a curfew (you can see the Colosseum from the piazza in front of their entrance), includes breakfast (very limited), has private bath, but no AC. Ask for a room not facing the piazza as it's a trendy hangout at night. You are a minute or two walk from the metro stop Cavour. You can also catch the electric bus 117 on via Serpenti (the closest street to the convent) which goes to the Colosseum, Spanish Steps, etc.

There are quite a few cheaper convents in Rome, but aren't as well located at the two I listed or have curfews you might not want. If you are interested in any of those, post back and I will list them.

The Beehive has classic doubles for 80€ a night, but it's a shared bath.

I haven't stayed in this self-catering, but it's location in Trastevere is a short walk to most things (near Ponte Mazzini) and in your price range.

Perhaps check Lonely Planet's Thorntree as it's mostly budget travelers your age. Check their hotels under their Rome section too plus they have suggestions of free or low cost things to do.

@Blueeyedcod: we're travelling from 1 through 6 september.
Ideally, we would like to find something within roughly half an hour walking distance of the centre.
I know it's a lot to ask for such a small budget, but I'd like to have seen the different options before deciding on the more expensive one. :)

I just went to booking.com and input your dates - there are several properties available for your budget in decent locations - i.e.

(that link may show more than one property but I'm referring to the Vatican Skyline listing).

You should be able to find something in Trastevere for that price, it is definitely not too low for Rome which runs on the cheap side of things.

I was looking at the Vatican Skyline, but somebody booked the last room in the meanwhile. It was very good. :(

I have found several low priced hotels and hostels around Termini, but I've read that it isn't a safe area.

My friend is worried about the safety of taking the metro back late at night, so she opts for accommodation within walking distance of Rome's main attractions.

Safety: Your main concern is pickpockets and scooters/traffic.

Walking: Either the old quarter or Trastevere will be a 30 minute walk from either the Vatican or the Colosseum, maybe less.

Not that it is any sort of guarantee, but we've used rentalinrome.com at least three times with no problems of double booking.
