Accomodation in Italy
 

Hi Fodorites

I'm after some help with accomodation for these 4 places in Italy.

1. Rome: A 3-4 star Hotel close to the main sights. (2 nights start + 2 nights end of trip)
2. (Outside)Siena region of Tuscany : A 3-4 star Villa (7 night stay)
3. Venice: A 3-4 star Hotel (2 night stay)
4. Sorrento (Amalfi Coast): A 3-4 star Hotel or B&B.(6 night stay)

Any help/advice gladly appreciated.

Rates between 3 and 4 can very widely depending on a bunch of factors - including location.

If you want specific recos from recent stays you really need to put some sort of budget and something about your party - a single, couple or family of 5.

In Florence we stayed at the Hotel David and enjoyed it more than any of the other hotels we stayed in while traveling Italy.

These are some hotels that I'd highly recommend. The only one that I don't know from personal experience, is ALBERGO DEL SENATO in Rome, but I will be staying there in a few weeks, and it has gotten very good reviews online. Anyway, here's my list:

In Rome: The above-mentioned ALBERGO DEL SENATO. I know the location very well because a few years ago we stayed around the corner. It's just across a tiny lane from The Pantheon, and is very walkable to most of ancient Rome, as well as the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona.

In Tuscany, we stayed in Radda, at RELAIS FATTORIA VIGNALE, which is a lovely small hotel with gorgeous views of the Tuscan countryside. It was easy to daytrip from there to many vineyards, as well as to Siena ( about 40 min) and Florence ( also about 40 min.) If you go, ask for rooms in the annex. These are simply decorated, but have amazing lush views of the countryside. Also don't miss dinner at PIZZERIA MICHELE. The owner missed his calling as a standup comic, and the pizza is unbelievably good.

In Venice, I'd recommend PENSIONE LA CALCINA, which overlooks one of the shipping canals. This is a small 3-star hotel that's about a 15 minute walk from Piazza San Marco. It has very good service and an outstanding breakfast! The more expensive rooms have windows overlooking the canal.

In Sorrento, we stayed at HOTEL TRAMONTANO, a 4-star set in a garden just a few steps away from the old town in Sorrento with all its restaurants and shops. We had a very comfortable room with an enormous balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples. There is a small swimming pool out front, as well as a tiny strip of beach at the bottom of the hotel. You could also check out BELLEVUE SYRENE, which is just down the block from HOTEL TRAMONTANO, also a 4-star that's gotten mostly favorable reviews.

If you have more than a few days to spend in the area, I'd recommend splitting your time between Sorrento and Capri, or Sorrento and Positano.
