Does anyone know of a good bed and breafast in Dam Square, cannot seem to get any vacancies around 22 Octboer!!

It's spelt "accommodation" and you should put "Amsterdam" in the title.

I don't know of any B+Bs right on Dam Square. There are several hotels.

You might try looking at www.channels.nl for lists of accommodations and user reviews.

Who cares how it's spelled!!! I'm so sick of people who feel they have to correct others, we can't all be perfect in every way.

Spelling does matter. Try using Google or any other search facility. A search for "accommodation amsterdam" brings over 4 million possible sites; a search for "akomodation amsterdam" brings just one answer, and if Amsterdam is spelt wrongly as well, Google finds nothing.

Of course you speak the truth Geoff, but as I said, I don't think it is our place to correct someone on their spelling. I'm pretty sure there are many things you are not good at and I'm sure you would not care to be reminded about it in public... this is a public place. Wouldn't the world be a better place if we looked for nice things to say instead of drawing attention to other people's faults.

Geoff, don't forget that for many people here (including me) English is not our first language so ..our google searches are not in English :)

No one said we have to be perfect, but could we at least agree that correct spelling is better than incorrect spelling? 'Better' because
it is essential to searches here,at other English-speaking websites, or at Google if you want English sites?

I don't get away without misspellings or typos myself, but find no offense in being corrected if I don't catch it myself.

I think we can each define for ourselves what 'our place' is. I don't bother correcting typos or misspelligs myself unless I can't understand what is meant, but I don't require that everyone thinks or does as I do. Looking for nice things to say is sweet, but I don't care to have others here say what 'our' place is. To my mind, and I speak only for myself, that's more irritating than a
spelling correction, which just goes to show that we don't all think alike.
Vive la difference.

Yes Elaine we can agree that correct spelling is better than incorrect spelling, there was no question about that. We will never all agree on this but I do feel that it is never my place to correct someone unless they ask me to. I was taught that that is good manners. Maybe you were taught otherwise, but whatever, it's certainly not worth arguing about.

Mischka, I was taught good manners myself.
I was also taught to be helpful. With one-word titles here, plus misspellings, one is more likely to have much trouble finding information on the internet, and most especially on this message board where the Search function is finicky even if posting have correct spelling and the planets are in alignment.
I see this forum as providing information where it is lacking, and correcting innaccuracies, all the time, including my own. Every correction, every bit of information, adds up to a better information base, and to better future travel. I think if we are going to ask strangers for help, we can expect that they will offer help on their own terms.

I don't feel it's polite to correct a person who evidently is struggling to write something in English or has a typing problem (the OP).
I don't mind at all to be corrected, this forum helps me to practise English at the same time I get very useful travel tips and try to give some myself. But that's me..I never correct anyone if they haven't asked me to do it.

Me either. It's tacky. Correcting a misspelled destination name or something like that is one thing, but a typo...c'mon.

I've always had good results using www.octopus-travel.com, they have lots in or near Dam square. I stayed at the Hotel Terminus (booked through them) and it was only 5-10 mins walk from Dam square and great location if you are after the coffee shops etc...also 5 mins walk from central station. Basic but clean and ok.

Simma...we loved the Seven Bridges Hotel on the Regulier Canal...about a ten minute walk to the Dam....

I'm for correcting spelling errors in place names, at the very least--I think that's helpful for the poster.

GeoffHamer, it's "spelled", not "spelt". And it's "incorrectly", not "wrongly". Really, man, learn how to spell and speak before you bash someone for not spelling a word properly (or "rightly" as you would probably say).

Apparently you're not aware that British English and American English are two different beasts. There was nothing in Geoff's posting that was incorrect; it just wasn't American usage or spelling.

I think correcting place names is very useful if it's done in a spirit of helpfulness.

I'm an American Brit, so yes, I am aware.

Not sure what an "American Brit" is, but if you are one, you ought to be aware of the differences in spelling and therefore ought to be aware that Geoff didn't make any "gaffs" as I believe you call them.

And I am an American but my father who taught me to read and write before I ever started school taught me the British spelling. So I still have a problem...and use two "LL"s in travelling etc. Finally remembered to keep the "U" out of color etc. On top of that I am the worlds worse typist as really never typed until I got my first computer.

LOL Alya, don't start with the colour, favour, favourite please!!!! I use to get in trouble all the time at school. I think it was 5th grade that my dear Dad went to the school and raised holy &quot;you know what&quot; and advised them that they did NOT know how to spell words correctly. I was sooo humiliated.

But must say the rest of the year I didn't get red circles around my misspelled words ;;)

Anyway, I am a mess!!! And seriously although I took one year of typing in HS hardly ever typed after that until about 9 years ago when I got my first computer. I do try to remember to edit my post but obviously I don't remember near enough. Take care!! And have a happy weekend. Oh, btw, I still say autumn instead of fall. And teatowel instead of dishtowel.

anyway try tulips B&amp;B, it's not in dam's square but it's at the edge of Vondel Park - it's gorgeous!!!!! Lovely and spacious for 100E per night. Sorry if it's out of your budget - this was our spluge hotel on our amsterdam trip last week. :) G'luck!
