Accommodations in Saint-Jean-de-Luz area

Hello All:

I may be visiting the Biarritz area this July and, after some research, believe that St. Jean de Luz would be a perfect place to stay. There are also some small towns in the surrounding area that look interesting.

Have any of you stayed in the region and, if so, can you recommend a hotel or apartment? I am still considering the budget, but would probably prefer somewhere under 170 Euros per night. However, I would be prepared to pay more for somewhere really special.

I have found a few holiday apartment complexes in the area. I have never stayed in these places before. Can anyone provide general comments on what I could expect at a Three Star complex?

Many in advance thanks for your suggestions.

Regards Ger

The Parc Victoria is lovely. I don't remember the rates. and in Biarritz outskirts we stayed at the Clair de Lune.

We went to St-Jean-de-Luz on a whim in the middle of July with no reservations. I wouldn't recommend the hotel we ended up staying at, but I will tell you the one I was VERY sorry not to have reserved in advance - the Maria Christina, at 13 rue Paul-Gelos. It's a beautiful big pink house covered in wisteria, just a bit away from the beach. As I recall, the price was something like $80-$100 for a double with bath, but this was a few years ago.
We loved the Restaurant Ramuntcho in St-Jean also - wonderful Basque specialties. I love that town!

Thanks guys, you are the BEST :)

I have posted another thread here re my tentative plans to take a French course in Biarritz. If you have any advice to give, particularly regarding the weather in July, I'd welcome it.

St. Jean de Luz certainly looks perfect and will give me the opportunity to explore the Basque region on both the French and Spanish sides.

regards ... Ger

Double rooms at the Maria Christina are 75 or 90 euros.

Breakfast per person is 7.

We have stayed also in French Basque in the village of Ainhoa in an elegant old Hotel with an excellant restaurant, The Hotel Ithurria that is a former inn dating back to 1657. The main street in this designated Beautiful village looks like a painting. There's a beautiful white dog that lives almost opposite the hotel.

It was perfect beach weather when we were there in July - high 80s (F) during the day, cloudless skies, cooled off in the evenings.

St-Jean-de-Luz is refreshing after the crowds and traffic in Biarritz, though it, too, is crowded in July. I just loved the pedestrian area, though, and the port with all the artists (bought two paintings there), and the chocolate and Basque linen stores. There is also the biggest vinegar store I've ever come across. You can buy a bottle of vinegar filled with fruits or peppers or herbs or combinations that is 3 or four feet tall! - plus other smaller varieties, of course. Wonderful, cheerful town with plenty of cultural offerings. There was a music festival when we were there, and every night the square near the port was filled with bands and singers.
