Accommodations in or near Edinburgh - $100 per night???
 

Hi:
I've been having difficulty finding budget-priced accommodations in Edinburgh or surrounds for around $100/night.

This is for two people, ensuite facilities.

All help much appreciated!

When will you be there? And where have you been looking? Assuming you're not looking at the last minute or for August (Festivals time), you should be able to find some pleasant, though not fancy, B&Bs for about that. Have you tried searching the Tourist Board listings (go to www.edinburgh.org). Another place with lots of modesly priced listings is Smoothhound (www.s-h-systems.co.uk).

Among other areas, there are big clusters of B&Bs in neighborhoods both to the southeast of the center (e.g., Newington, Prestonfield) and to the southwest of the center (e.g., Bruntsfield, Tollcross) that are only a short bus ride (or a longish walk) to Princes Street, and the buses are quite frequent, so don't hesitate to stay in one of those areas.

You're welcome. There are other good areas, too, but those areas do have concentrations of moderately priced places and are near major bus arteries.

You can look up the location of anyplace you find on www.mappy.com. I'm sure Lothian Buses is online, too, for a bus map. Basically, to the SE, the best bus arteries are along Newington Rd.-Minto St.-Mayfield Gdns.-Craigmillar Park (all one road, whose name keeps changing), and along Dalkeith Road, which parallels it. To the SW, many buses go down Lothian Road (busy and not scenic) to Tollcross, and below that the good B&B neighborhoods start near Bruntsfield Place (which turns into Morningside Road, more or less getting more upscale as it goes)--some of the street names in the area are Leamington, Gilmore, and Gillespie.

Anyway, that's a rough explanation, and I'm sure others will differ or give you more places to look, but my main point is just that those are reasonably good bets for the budget-conscious to try.

My favorite B&B in Edinburgh is Ardenlee Guest House. www.ardenleeguesthouse.com A taxi ride to the castle will cost you a fiver. (I prefer to take the taxi up that mountain and walk down) :-)

For that price your options are B&Bs, already well covered by KT, or budget chain hotels, or (if not university term time) university halls of residence.

For a budget chain hotel which is well located and quite new so should still be nice, if it's not too much at £77 prpn, I'd recommend the Premier Travel Inn on Lauriston Place - http://www.premiertravelinn.com/pti/...1&iscsell= I've stayed in other Travel Inns & they've always been quite nice.

A bit more basic so I'm sure cheaper is the Travel Lodge on St Mary's Street - http://www.travelodge.co.uk/find_a_h...inburghCentral. I think I've seen good reviews of it here.
