Accommodations in Edinburgh, Scotland
 

We are ending our tour of England & Scotland on October 2 and will return the rented car to the airport in Edinburgh. We will be in Edingburg for 3 nights. We would like ideas from other travellers on a moderately priced, tidy accommodation for a couple in our mid 60's. Hotel or B & B, our preference is to have easy access to the Edinburgh airport ( via taxi or public transportation) for a morning flight. Suggestions?

The Novotel at Edinburgh Park is a fair bit out of town, but it's on the tram line and close to the airport. You might well get a deal somewhere better closer to the time

We stayed in the Richmond Place Apartments on a recent trip to Edinburgh. The price is somewhat above your budget, but it's in an extremely convenient location for visiting the city, and much cheaper than anything else I could find in a central location. The fact that it has a very basic kitchen could help you save money on meals.

The apartments are in a building that is mostly a student residence. When I realized that, I was afraid it might be noisy, but it was in fact very quiet. Most of the students were Asian, and I assume that their culture emphasizes studying over carousing.

There is a 24-hour manned reception desk, which offered many of the benefits of a hotel. I don't think there was maid service, but for a short stay that may not be a problem. There is an on-site laundry room.

We dropped a rental car at Edinburgh airport and took a taxi to the apartments. We departed Edinburgh by train.

Since you'll be in Edinburgh such a short time, I think staying near the airport would seriously cut into your sightseeing time.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Royal Mile on Cowgate Street last fall. Their rates are very near your budget, and breakfast is included.

I missed out the economy hotels, of which there are many. I although, last time I needed to do this, the Dakota - which is at Queensferry, and, I think, too far out for you, but U.S. Wonderful- was, on the day, £85... £5 more than the Ibis at Edinburgh Park

£85 is moderate in a lot of places -- but Edinburgh has higher room rates than a lot of places in teh UK.

Some good suggestions above -- but definitely try the Premier Inns and Travelodges -- there are several of each in the city centre. One Travelodge is less than a block from the tram stop at St Andrew Square and steps from Princes Street.

Travelodges are basic but very good value. Premier Inns are nicer.

I've stayed there a couple of times and it is indeed wonderful. They also now run a shuttle to the airport that would drop you close to the tram into the city. Since the OP says they're dropping their car at EDI after touring Scotland, the Dakota might be an ideal location at least for the first night. http://www.dakotahotels.co.uk/hotels/edinburgh/

I actually like staying in Queensferry, especially if you want to use Edinburgh as a base from which to tour places like the Fife villages, Culross, even Stirling.
