Accommodations Amsterdam under 175€

Looking to spend a few nights at end of a trip in May 2018. Open to: B&B, hotel or even hostel [but with private rooms and bathrooms]. Prefer central location to maximize the short time on our first visit.

Thank you.

The Amsterdam VVV Tourist Office books hotels if you want a local source -pretty much judge by price to quality.

DebitNM Jul 20th, 2017 02:28 PM

That link just basically goes to booking.com

Was hoping for some personal recommendations, thanks though.

A couple years ago we stayed at The Hotel The Exchange. Weird name, and kind of an odd hotel as you can request basic vs plush rooms, so you can pretty much choose what you want. Location was good for us, close to the train station. Our room was very clean and had an ensuite bathroom that was quite large. We had no hesitation staying there, FWIW. Each room is done by the local art college, so each room has it's own theme. Quite interesting! We had the purse room, lol!

thanks though.>

sorry they used to do their own -I used them several times but times change.

Perhaps think out of the box and stay in nearby Haarlem. You can stay in a top hotel such as Stemples for the price of a one star in Amsterdam - it is well within your budget. Why do it? In the end, Amsterdam is a big international city while Haarlem is a delightful small city in itself where you will get more of a feeling of how the Dutch live. The train ride into Amsterdam is only 15 minutes and there are 4 trains an hour. Haarlem is an easy bus ride to Keukenhof Gardens if you are there early in the month and it is easy to get to other Dutch cities and towns from there by train.

what a great idea, basingstoke! I will check it out!

And I erred in my date... while the majority of trip is in May, we will be in The Netherlands in early June.

I can speak from experience that if you do not feel compelled to stay IN Amsterdam, Haarlem is a great alternative. It is, as has been mentioned, an easy trip back and forth, too.

travelbuff127 Jul 21st, 2017 06:22 AM

I speak from experience as well' the Park Hotel across from VondelPark and the Hard Rock. Perfect location to travel about the city and a very chic boutique hotel. Loved it

Deb, I have stayed at what has been renamed since the prior died as The Neighbors Magnolia. (formerly called the Zandbergen) It's B&Bish / hotelish, with a good breakfast. It is nothing fancy, but clean and modern. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the location. It's in a residential neighborhood just at the edge of Vondel Park. Just steps to the tram, so it's easy to get around. Check it out.

Deb - if you are interested in Haarlem, here is a link to my TR of the city and side trips from there. Note that it was written when Obama was making his first run for pres, so it may be a bit dated in spots. One of the many things we like about Haarlem other than its overall ambiance, is the uber lively outdoor cafe scene around the Grote Markt. Unlike other hotels around the Markt, Stempels does not directly face it - it has the cathedral as a buffer which means that it would be quieter than the other places. If looking for a hotel in Haarlem, they mostly cluster around the Markt except for the Golden Tulip which is opposite the train station. I would not recommend that location.

It has been a few years now, but I stayed at the Hotel Brouwer and really enjoyed my 3-day stay in Amsterdam (also at the start of a trip).

It was a cheerful, comfortable place to saty.

PalenQ Jul 21st, 2017 12:59 PM

I now base in Haarlem for a more let's say Dutch regional town and much lower hotel prices - though I stay in a B&B (Bot B&B) right in the heart of town. Great rail connections for so many places - better in many ways IMO than Amsterdam for that.

If I had not stayed in Amsterdam many times I would of course stay there on first visits - really neat at night no matter what you're looking for!

Haarlem too like all Dutch towns has a lot of nightlife - especially on weekends.

menachem Jul 22nd, 2017 09:42 AM

DebNM: I'll say it again and again: Pension Homeland.

Haarlem has nightlife? That surprises me.

basingstoke2 Jul 22nd, 2017 10:19 AM

Yes, it does.

Hi, If you would like a nice clean hotel in a quiet safe neighborhood, about 1/2 blk from the tram, check out the Delphi Hotel on Appollian. I've stayed there about 4 X, most recently this July and it is a very nice reasonable hotel. I had breakfast with room rate. Check out price, but it is much better than a hotel right in the center of town and it is about 4 minutes from the Rijks Museum/Van Gogh Museum. I think you would like it, right on a big boulevard, but quiet. Sue

menachem Jul 30th, 2017 03:19 AM

Apollolaan. You'll have trouble finding it otherwise.

DebitNM Jul 30th, 2017 12:27 PM

Hampshire Hotel - The Manor Amsterdam, Amsterdam ??
119 euros a night.

Thoughts?

I like the Delphi, but they don't show availability this far out.

Sue81 Aug 1st, 2017 02:59 PM

email or call the hotel directly, and it is not hard to find, use taxi. On big boulevard. Sue

I stayed here.

Can't find direct email. Contacted BW Reservation center and they don't open booking this far out.

Stayed at the Owl hotel near Vondelpark several years ago. Enjoyed our stay, good breakfast and location.

HappyTrvlr Aug 12th, 2017 12:11 PM

Loved the Ambassade on Herengracht Canal in the beautiful central region..
Haarlem is a nice small city but it's not Amstetdam. Add the expense and time of travel and Amsyerdam looks even better.
The newly refurbished Rijksmuseum is a treasure to visit.

DebitNM Aug 12th, 2017 03:37 PM

The Ambassade looks lovely but way above 175€ a night.

Too early to check Owl Hotel rates/availability.

menachem Aug 13th, 2017 06:20 AM

Hm. Just book something on booking.com, make it refundable, filter for the rating you want and your budget and be done with it.

Elizabeth_S Aug 13th, 2017 07:14 AM

This squeaks in right on your budget (although they don't show rates yet for May next year) We stayed there for 4 nights in June - we love the neighbourhood and the hotel was great (note at that time it didn't have a breakfast room but they were building one - I feel I gave you this info ..... sorry if I'm repeating myself!)

that's the old Dept of Social Security offices. Always have to laugh that now they call it a "Bank"

UNCalum Aug 13th, 2017 03:23 PM

I've stayed at the Manor, previously mentioned here. The tram stops in front, and Dam Square is only a short ride. The rooms are nice, but the wall covering in the hall is rather dizzying. Of course, I don't hang out in the hall and could ignore it. Breakfast is good.

A grocery store is nearby--nice for drinks and snacks

I would definitely stay there again.

We're staying here in Haarlem in a couple of weeks. 122 euro/night for the large terrace room. http://www.maltshotel.nl/EN/ Will report back. (We've been to Amsterdam before and are looking for a quieter experience.)

Sue81 Aug 17th, 2017 06:37 PM

debit, google......... Delphi Hotel Apollolaan (Menacham is correct as to the spelling), in Amsterdam 101 Apollolann I think it is. Find the exact website, and write directly to the hotel, not some intermediary. They do respond to inquires and will let you know when they will take a reservation. Don't go thru BW, they only book at the last minute. Take BW card with you if a member to use when there. I'll try to find the website for you if I can and post it here. As I recall, with breakfast would be within your budget, ask for room on the boulevard, very nice, clean, reasonable. There is an interesting monument right out front on the boulevard of a large group of Dutch resistance who were shot/killed by the Gestapo out front in WW II. Just was there in July. Sue

Sue81 Aug 17th, 2017 06:48 PM

HI, OK try this...send an email to [email protected] and ask them when they will take reservations for the time you plan to be there. Ask for a rate with and without breakfast on boulevard.. I was able to make a reservation way ahead of my trip, by avoiding the BW sites. This is directly to the hotel. This is not that far from downtown, like 5 min to the Rijks Museum and Van Gogh, trolley 1/2 blk away, but ask at hotel exactly where tram stop is, we walked farther than needed.Get tram tickets at hotel. Sue nice little hotel and much less expensive than in the middle of the crowds/chaos closer in, at least for my taste. Good luck. July was packed with tourists. Sue

DebitNM Aug 30th, 2017 01:38 PM

Well, as luck would have it, thanks to a couple of new credit cards and sign up bonuses...we will be spending 4 nights at The Intercontinental totally on points. Not a bad deal when the rooms are going for well over 500 euros a night!!

Thanks all!

menachem Aug 30th, 2017 09:35 PM

Sounds like a great outcome. The Amstel Hotel is top notch and beautifully situated.

HappyTrvlr Aug 31st, 2017 07:33 AM

You will love Amsterdam! The hotel deal sounds terrific.
