Accommodation on Isle of Skye route

Dear All,

I really need some help. In May 2025, I am doing the west highlands and the Isle of Skye after that. I had no problem securing accommodation for 10 days on the west highland route, However, I have encountered great difficulties in securing accommodation on the Isle of Skye. I want to go on a hiking trip and this is my itinerary. I really need some one to look at it and tell me how i can improve on it or suggests alternate routes to prevent the problem with accommodation. Tentatively, this is the plan:
Day 1: Ardvasar to Achnacloich (accommodation booked)
Day 2: Achnacloich to Torrin (no available accommodation)
Day 3 : Torrin to Broadford
Day 4: Kilmarie to Sligachan
Day 5: Sligachan to Portree
Day 6: The Storr Dam to Portree
Day 7: The Storr Dam to Quirang
Day 8: The Quirang to Flodigarry Area
Day 9: onward travel

Can someone who is familiar with Isle of Skye tell me how I can improve on this itinerary so that I would be able to find suitable accommodation? I want to go across the Isle of Skye but might have to abandon this route due to lack of accommodation on route. Please advice me. I live in Canada and have never been to Scotland for hike. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to Fodors. The problem isn't your itinerary -- it is that Skye has become INSANELY popular and places book up far in advance. To find availability in / near those specific locations (most of which have very limited options in any case) on specific dates will probably be close to impossible.

Will you have a car?? If so, I'd book one central location -- say Sligachan or Portree, and drive to various trail heads for day hikes - returning to the same accommodation each night. Or possibly choose two different bases for 4 or 5 nights each.

Thank you so much for your reply. Sadly, I don't drive and thus am stumped. The distance is too long to walk and hike back to your base. Do you have any suggestions for walkers/hikers? So far, I have booked accommodations at Ardvasar and Broadford. I certainly want to go to Storr Dam and Quirang. How do I do it without a car and with no accommodation available?

There are a few taxi services and drivers on Skye

here are some to get you started:

There is also limited bus service - Stagecoach is the main operator.

Search around on line for various blogs about visiting Skye without a car -- lots of backpackers have blogs and You Tube videos describing visits to Skye..

Just picked this up.
I have to say, I don’t quite understand your planned hiking itinerary. For example, Torrin to Broadford but then you head to Kilmarie to then walk next day to Sligachan…presumably via Camasunary then up Glen Sligachan.
But why go to Broadford the day before…or do you plan to walk the coast part of the way? There is a bus service which goes down to the Elgol/Glasnakille area (passing Torrin and Kilmarie) …have you researched it? That or a taxi is the only way to get from Broadford to Kilmarie on that particular day.

Have you looked at The Skye Trail, a long distance suggested route through the island?

There is very little if any single night B&B accommodation down that road to Elgol(Kilmarie etc) though quite a few self catering cottages for longer stays. There’s none at the Storr lochs. But Portree isn’t far away so a taxi or the Northern loop bus could be used to head back to the town etc.

Stagecoach bus service on Skye, timetable…
