Accommodation in Tropea, Italy
Hi All,
We're heading back to Italy and have a few spare days to fill in Calabria before meeting relatives for Easter. Does anyone have a recommendation for an apartment or B&B in the centro storico of Tropea. There are no recent posts & I'd appreciate some suggestions. With thanks, Ozlinz |
May be you will have a look at

Also look at bed-and-breakfast.it. It links you to each apartment or B&B's website (or email if they don't have a website) or you can send a blanket request for offers for the area. You can click the map to search B&B's in the area locations.

Don't mean to hijack your post Ozlinz, but I am really interested in going to Tropea next fall. Thinking November. First, how is the weather in November and what is the best way to get there from Rome? I want to stay right in the center of town in a small apartment or B&B. Has anyone stayed in the B&B's posted above? Some look pretty nice and are certainly cheap. I will probably fly into and out of Rome, or I could fly out of Naples. Can I do a day trip or one night to Stromboli from Tropea? Something keeps calling me to Tropea. Not much written about it here, or anywhere really. Would appreciate any info on Tropea.

Barb, you can do excursions from Tropea to the Aeolians. Check here http://www.csttropea.it/web/en/124/aeolian-islands.html

Barb, you can get a pretty good idea of November weather in Tropea by simply following the weather this month.
http://www.ilmeteo.it/meteo/Tropea However, you can use the same website to look at what the weather was last year in that area, and for as much as 5 years prior, day by day in November, to see what the range is, and how unpredictable it can be day to day. http://www.ilmeteo.it/portale/archiv...eggio+Calabria I really doubt you can count on taking a tour to Stromboli. November is typically one of the stormiest periods on the Mediterranean and coastal Italy, and that is a famously stormy area in particular. If the weather is nice and calm -- and it can be in November -- perhaps someone will be running a tour, but you would need to catch the right circumstances, and be flexible about it, not plan it in advance. There is someone who regularly posts on Frommer's message boards who goes to Calabria nearly every year so you might try asking questions over there. He knows his onions of Tropea, so to speak. |
As said above, forget any tour from Tropea to Stromboli or wherever in low season. Even if the sea wouldn't be too rough, there would be no demand for such a thing. Stromboli is best reached by boat from Milazzo (airport Catania). There are also 2 weekly overnight boats from Naples.
Best airport for Tropea: Lamezia Terme good train connections from Rome Fiumicino, however: FCO dp 6.38, 10.08, 11.38, 13.08; 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 hrs journey, fare around 80 EUR. Fro today, there are no bad weather news concerning Tropea, but some roads in Calabria had to be closed because of inundations and landslides. The situation is worse at other places in Italy: Venice and Carrara inundated, inundated streets at Genova, Modena and around Vicenza, collapse of a school building in Rome and of a road bridge at Reggio Calabria because of landslips, evacuation of some hundred people south of Lake Como, all archeological places in and around Rome closed for secutity reasons, curfew at Catania, landslides and power blackout in Valtellina, landslides in Friuli, etc. etc. |
thanks for your responses. Looks like November might be an iffy month, but due to work schedules, might be the only time I can go. Not sure about 8 1/2 hrs on a train. Maybe a flight from Naples to Lamezia Terme?
|
Lamezia cannot be reached by plane from Naples, but from Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Bergamo, Turin, Bologna, Pisa, Treviso and London (ryanair).
|
Ah, London, I could fly into London using BA miles! Thanks!
|
Beware of taxes flying into London with miles.

Thanks for the responses & the hijack Barb - sorry for the late reply but I lost contact for a while!
