Accommodation in Prague, Krakow in or close to city centers
I would appreciate suggestions for places to stay in or near the city centers in Prague and in Krakow, preferably within walking distance of principal sites. Would prefer small hotel or pension.

Here is a great place to stay in Prague. If you consider, ask for a roon looking at the Charles Bridge. www.utripstrosu.cz Plus info for download on both cities. Richard www.inyourpocket.com/Czech-Republic/Prague www.inyourpocket.com/Poland/Krakow

In Krakow we stayed at this wonderful old hotel - Royal Hotel. It is not small - it is an old building and actually very big. BUT it is very central - and an added bonus is the Restaurant - Pod Wavelm attached to it. If you decide to stay there ask for a room with a view of the Wavel castle.
The buses for a number of day tours stop right in front of the hotel. We had such a pleasant stay there.

We have been to Prague twice & both times we have stayed at the Pension Dietzenhofer located in Mala Strana. It is on the same side of the Charles Bridge as the castle. Price obviously depends on the size of the room. In 2009 we needed a 2-room suite, which cost us $200, but a smaller room would be much less. An ample breakfast is included. We like the location a lot; it is quiet & we walked everywhere. Also, by staying in Mala Strana, we walked across the bridge every day, even when we spent a day at the castle. I think, for example, that if someone stays in Wenceslas Square (which is noisy) you probably wouldn't need to go across the bridge every day, & we love seeing the bridge & the views, especially at night.
In Krakow we stayed at Hotel Saski, which is inside the walls, & about 1/2 block from the Main Square. Price was very reasonable for a room for 3 people in 2003, & included a very hearty hot & cold breakfast. It's not a pension, but a smaller hotel in a very central location.
Hope this helps.

http://www.salvator.cz/ This hotel is well located for exploring the old town in Prague. The staff was very accommodating and even made arrangements for us to have a simple breakfast in the wee hours of the morning when we had a very early flight on the day of our departure.

We very much liked the Hotel Kampa Gardens located on Kampa Island which is right under the Charles Bridge with easy bridge access and a perfect location for Prague. I would describe it as high end budget, good clean rooms, some with great views and with Ikea like decor. Staying on the Island gives one easy and quick walking access to both the Old and New towns, not to mention knock out city views, a peaceful haven, a charming square of its own and some good restaurants and shops.
