Accommodation in Madrid

I am not looking for hotels with all the trimmings that I never use but am looking for a typical Spanish place that has some character about it and is in an interesting area of Madrid. As long as they speak English I am happy with B&Bs, homestays or small hotels. Any ideas please.

I just made a reservation for April 30 in Milan at the Hotel San Francisco, which I saw in Fodor's 2002. It is near the Central Station and two underground lines (therefore easy access to the duomo) has a small garden, 31 rooms and the price was $94. Check it out at http://www.hotel-sanfrancisco.it.

Hi Liz,

We stayed at the Hotel Mora which is reasonably priced, about a block from the Prado, a block from the Reina Sofia,
and across from the Botanic Garden.

They don't have a website but you can do a search here or look at just about any guide book. It's always highly recommended. I will definitely stay there again.

Enjoy your trip,
Kathleen
